Guest guest
Dear Experts in Animal Welfare, It has been almost two months since we attended the Asia for Animals conference 2005 at Singapore and formed the following resolutions: RESOLUTION OF ASIA FOR ANIMALS 2005 At the close of the AAC 2005, delegates adopted a resolution to strengthen animal rights and welfare practices in Asia which called for: 1. Asian governments to strenghten their cooperation and enforcement efforts to combat the illegal trade in wildlife. 2. The Thai government to ban the export of elephants from Thailand. 3. Animals transported for slaughter or further fattening not to be transported for more than a total of eight hours from the point of loading. 4. Consumption of dogs to be rejected by progressive governments and stopped. The government of South Korea was singled out in this respect. 5. The acceptance and support of a methodical, systematic and scientific Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, coupled with mass immunization of the dog population, as the most effictive means of humanely controlling the stray dog population and the spread of rabies. 6. The Australian government to immediately halt the export of live sheep and the use of 1080 Poison as a means of killing wildlife, due to the fact that it's inhumane and kills many non-target species. 7. Support of the Singapore-based Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (SPCA) and Cat Welfare Society, who are asking for a more effective and humane solution to reduce the population of stray cats in Singapore, and also to reinstate the stray cat rehabilitation scheme. 8. Support of the Singapore-based SPCA and Animals Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) call for the ban of the use of wild animals in circuses to be extended to captive facilities in Singapore where circus-like shows were performed. This included Singapore Zoo and Dolphin Lagoon. 9. A committed team to be formed along with NGOs and concerned governmental departments in India, Nepal, Tibet, Malaysia, Japan and Singapore with necessary powers to seize and punish on the spot those who are caught illegally trading in wild animals. Just wanted to know if there has been any positive movement in trying to see the resolutions mentioned above turning into reality. We all must be busy in our regular animal welfare activities. But who is doing what, with regards to the resolutions (country specific) ? Also if we can have a news letter on AFAC delegates, what they are doing? etc or specifically focussing on the resolutions adopted and can be circulated to all the people who attended it. Maybe Kim and Merritt can do that for us. Very few people who attended the AFAC 2005 seem to have enrolled at www.aapn.org While answering this email I would like the responders to support their replies with concrete proof ( news cuttings, articles, Government announcements etc ). Doing so will help one in knowing how much progress is being done, and where we are lacking. Also it would be nice to know where we have failed. For Example: 2. The Thai government to ban the export of elephants from Thailand. Well, this was just an idea that came to my mind, do let me know f I am wrong.
