Guest guest
Island news paper www.island.lk O4.6.26 Butterfly Butchers abd fake wild life enthusiasts In democratic countries when politicians do something against the law or when they make a wrong decision they resign from their posts or the political party ask them to resign. If Sri Lanka want to move their country forward they should follow these rules. We were surprised to hear that the Deparment of wild life conservation which has large number of wild life Parks don`t have a wild life rehabilitation center to realese the wild animals which are confiscated . The National Zoological Gardens of Sri lanka is another lonely prison where animals suffer being underfed and neglected. We heard that the Pinnawela elephant orphange has lost 10 elephants and now got the world wide reputation as a dirty breeding center. One she elephant named Lasanda had killed her baby when it was born as the vet surgeons in charge didn`t remove the orphan baby elephant which was sucking milk from her when she was pregnant. Nikini a female elepahant was tied under a tree and didn`t receive proper treatment or shelter when she was pregnant. ..She was not able to deliver her baby and Peradeniya University lecturers removed the dead body in April. Nikini died few days ago on the 18th of June. The experienced middle grade officers were transferred to Dehiwela Zoo and now 4 elephants have died after that. Many villagers protested against the transfer of offcers exposing the bad state of Pinnawela orphanage saying that is a set up to destroy the orphanage by corrupted officers and authorities. We learned that the Zoo Director is a retired Brigadier and Pinnawela orphange is supervised by a science graduate who has specialised inthe study of fish !Both of them don`t have the experience or knowledge to run the elephant orphanage and as a result it is deteriorating. Commanding General of the United States Pacific army Lieutenant General James L.Campbell and Minister of Law and order ,Buddha Sasana and deputy Minister of defence Ratnasiri Wickremanayake Top officers of the armed forces were at Kukuleganga for the opening ceremony of the opening of the United Nations backed Peace Support Operations Training centre. They were given white pigeons by a police officer.Mr Wickramanayake was seen sending the pigeon up.It fell down into his hands. The pigeon was dead. We heard that Mr Wickramanayake want to investigate to know whether it was an act of sabotage. Some people think that the Minister must have holding the pigeon tight in his fingers and as a result it must have died. In 1997 a little school boy from a poor family was killed by a lion in the Ahungalle Park.Minister Wikramanayake was the minister in charge of wild life then .Had he listen to the local and foreign visitors who warned and exposed the animal cruelty prevailed in that Park that boy`s life could have been saved. Then zoo was closed down and animals were saved because Environmental Foundation filed a case against the owner In 2000 Minister Wickramanayake allowed this same man to open a dream park which housed different exotic birds. That was a wrong decision. The political party also betrayed the people allowing this man to hold high office . On the 16th of January 2004 this man was caught with 12 open bill storks (Vivarathuduwa). He was caught at Wanathawilluwa at Wilpattu National Park Boundary. He had 2 killos of venison which he stated that he bought for his consumption. It is illegal to keep that meat .He was produced before Puttlam Court. That person was posing as a wild life enthusiastic and a conservationsit. He was seen displaying crocodiles and pythons in his so called dream Park. The 12 open bills were too small and they were handed over to the zoo. They died there. We request that he should be removed from the position of the office he holds and he should not be allowed to import any more birds from abroad .It would be better if his so called Dream(horror )Park be closed and the birds should be sent back to their countries. many birds die during the illegal pet trade . He is suspected to be involved in that trade and getting down birds in the same way. With birds flu in the air it would be better if the Government ban importing birds from abroad. The officers of the Department of Wild life Conservation deserve praise for job well done. We hope the Government would safe guard these officers. A shop in Liberty Plaza was selling butterflies which were killed and framed . This butterfly butcher should be given the maximum punishment for for his offence for making money from killing these innocent creatures. This was done in last year A foreign investor was having a zoo in Attanagalla at Kandalanda estate. There were Three pea-cocks , Water Monitor ,Nine startortises and Ash Doves and Giant Squirrels were kept as prisoners in cages. These animals are protected by the law.Former DIG of of that area was in charge of that estate. There were large number of other birds in that estate. It is quite interesting to know the foreigner has written a letter to the Prime Minister blaming the wild life officers who came to confiscate these animals. Many Sri lankans think the foreigner should be sent back to his country .We request that these people including his employee should be given Maximum punishment .
