Ecomessage is an initiative of Interpol (the International Criminal Police Organization) designed to improve sharing of wildlife crime information among international wildlife law enforcement agencies. It allows critical data to be transmitted efficiently to the Interpol General Secretariat in Lyon, France. ¡°Ineffective communication has repeatedly been cited as a key cause of inadequate international cooperation to combat wildlife crime,¡± said Grace Gabriel, IFAW Wildlife and Habitat Protection Deputy Director. ¡°The award is a major incentive for countries to use Ecomessage, a tool which greatly enhances communication in the global fight against wildlife criminal activity. ¡°IFAW will provide up to US$30,000 in training and/or their choice of law enforcement equipment to the agency that has filed the Ecomessage which most meaningfully contributes to the international fight against criminals who illegally traffic in protected wildlife.¡± Interpol and IFAW have distributed an Ecomessage pack in Interpol¡¯s four working languages¡ªArabic, English, French and Spanish¡ªto all Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) Management Authorities and selected wildlife law enforcement agencies worldwide as well as making copies available to delegates at the 13th Conference of the Parties of CITES in Bangkok. The winner of the Ecomessage award will be selected by the Interpol Working Group on Wildlife Crime after reviewing all Ecomessages submitted to Lyon prior to 30 November 2004. ¡°Ecomessage is a very valuable enforcement tool and IFAW is proud to support Interpol in this significant initiative,¡± said Ms. Gabriel.
