Dear Animal Lovers Normally, I never forward global e-mails but in this case I must make an exception as Thailand is involved. In mid-October 2003, an APEC summit will be held in Bangkok and the city fathers are intent on creating a good impression. One of the measures involved in this cleaning up session is to 'deal' with the 1,500 stray dogs in three areas of the City. The cost of this is estimated to be 30 million baht and the local government has promised to sterilize and vaccinate all the dogs before releasing them back on to the streets after the summit. Check out: www.soidogrescue.org for further information. I hope it is true that the dogs will be treated humanely before (if ever) their release. However, I do not believe this will happen. On 10 September 2003, the German newspaper 'Bild' was reported that the local officials in Bangkok were going to kill all the dogs. In 'The Nation' on 13 September 2003, it was reported that one of the proposed sites for the dog shelters at Sa Kaew is facing opposition from the local residents who do not want it near them and, in particular, near their water supply. Below are some addresses we would like you to contact and ask for clarification on this matter. Also, the address of the animal shelters would be helpful to enable us to visit the dogs and make sure they are fit and well. Please feel free to circulate this to your friends in the hope they too can pressurise the Bangkok officials into treating the stray dogs humanely.
