Guest guest Report post Posted January 1, 1970 SAVE SAEMANGEUM In an eleventh hour reprieve, the ecologically disastrous Saemangeum reclamation project has been stopped by the South Korean courts with just weeks to go before its completion. This project would have meant the likely extinction of two migratory species of shorebirds; threatened status for many more; the complete collapse of the local fishing community and pollution of two major estuaries. The land reclaimed will be too polluted to use for anything other than industrial development. The South Korean Government has declared that it will fight the decision at appeal in three months. In that time it is essential that international pressure be put upon the Government to show them that this project is unacceptable. Please below and sign the petition that will be sent to the South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Help save Saemangeum. Click on: http://www.wbkenglish.com/petition01.asp With your help we can: … Save the Spoon-billed Sandpiper from extinction … Save the Spotted Greenshank from extinction … Save 25 other species of shorebird from a serious threat to their survival … Save the free-flowing estuaries of the Mangyeung and Dongjin Rivers … Save the local fishing community and its dependants … Save the entire Saemangeum area from high level, irreversible pollution Please pass this petition on to as many people as you can. We¹re hoping for 1,000 signatures 10,000 would be impossible for the South Korean government to ignore! Thank you.
