The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court also fined Zhang Yi, the smuggler, 30,000 yuan (US$3,600). Zhang, a resident of Beijing's Chaoyang District, attempted to take eight falcons to the United Arab Emirates by air on October 19, 2000, but was foiled by airport customs officials. Sakers enjoy the state's highest level of protection in China. Quote
