AIRLINES BARS SHIPMENT OF " LEGALLY-TRADED " WILDLIFE: Lufthansa Airlines has

announced that it will no longer transport animals captured in the wild for

commercial purposes. This is a great step for the millions of animals (such

as primates, birds, reptiles, and fish) who are trapped in the wild,

including in the U.S., and transported around the world as exotic pets,

food, for biomedical research, display, and other purposes. Many of these

animals die in transit or shortly after arrival in the importing country due

to insufficient care. Those who survive the flight die within the first

year or are doomed to a life in cruel captivity, far from any semblance of

their natural environment. While Lufthansa's step is laudable, they are

receiving pressure from wildlife dealers and other powerful interests to

rescind the shipping ban. Although the wildlife trade is technically

" legal, " Lufthansa has shown, through its compassionate decision, that just

because something is " legal " it's not necessarily right.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Thank Lufthansa for taking a strong stance to ban

commercial wildlife shipments on its flights! You can send them an email

through their website: www.lufthansa-usa.com/ (click on " contact us " ) or

write Lufthansa Customer Relations, 1640 Hempstead Turnpike, E. Meadow, NY

11554 / fax: (516) 296-9660 (sorry, no phone #).
