Guest guest
Brad, I spent lots of time researching the animals killed in some plant foods production. http://www.geocities.com/holist2002/MorePeacefulDiet.html there are also regular deaths from vehicles on roads, deforestation to make room for buildings, and roads aquisition of coal and oil and metals then there's the regular deaths from animals in polluted waters from industries making products. air pollution from burning coal, oil kill animals and people. generally anything that's connected to an infrastructure that contains machinery or products of machinery has caused harm, and usually deaths. and here are some ideas I've collected for another list: -Gardening will help with many harms. Using self-watering containers like the EarthBox, http://www.earthbox.com/ will make gardening more efficient and more productive, and easier and requiring less time. After filling with dirt and planting, it only requires a few minutes to refill them with water every other day. They produce much larger plants than ground-grown ones (my brussell sprouts are 3 times as large as my ground-grown ones, and my kale and collard are much larger than that even). They also eliminate mole/vole, etc problems, and use less water, and you can use zero pesticides, etc. And get the freshest food) I buy my organic seeds from www.seedsofchange.com info on how to grow and how to harvest any plant http://www.scs.leeds.ac.uk/pfaf/index.html how to handle pests organically http://www.ourgardenpests.com/ email groups on organic gardening /search?query=organic+gardening -sprouting grains/seeds/beans will increase their mass and their nutrition = requiring less harvested material for a meal. Sprouting also reduces/eliminates anti-enzymes so the nutrion is more available and absorbed better. There are many sprouters available http://www.sproutpeople.com/devices/index.html and many places to get sprouting seeds/grains/beans I get bulk 5lb bags of seeds from www.sprouthouse.com I highly recommend Easy Sprout, http://www.sproutamo.com/ it evenly sprouts all the seed/grain/bean because of the excellent air-flow. It uses the air and heat to sprout much faster than other devices- 2-3 days. And requires only 2 steps- soaking the seeds, and draining that water. Pretty cheap as well http://www.sproutman.com/sprouts.html is an excellent book on all you need to know to sprout very well, and some intro into the healthiness and nutrition of it. very easy and pleasant read. www.sproutpeople.com is also a great site for info, and they'll give you email help with general sprouting questions Some states offer renewable energy providers. I (in PA) use Green Mountian and get all my household energy from renewable sources http://www.greenmountain.com/index.jsp Also you can buy solar cells, wind generators, or water turbines to produce some, or all, of your energy. And thanks to state incentives, and tax deducations, this can cost less than you'd think. A family in Maryland cut their CO2 emissions by 90%, cut their grid-energy use by 70%, and all for less than $8,000. and after they've paid their loan off (costing them $40/month), they'll be paying $1,000 less for their energy bills than they previously were http://www.dsireusa.org/ find state incentives here http://www.realgoods.com/renew/ this groups will help you with any questions you have on renewable energy sources, more efficient appliances, etc. They can even come out to your house if your considering to install a big system. They have everything from LED bulbs, solar power attic fans, systems to deposit your sink water outdoors, to solar cells, wind generators, and water turbines ideas to make your own power, reduce energy use http://www.homepower.com/ specific ways to reduce energy use (and reduce energy costs) http://www.eren.doe.gov/consumerinfo/energy_savers/index.html dept of energy info- http://www.eren.doe.gov/ but put it in persepctive.... I once went around at college and put recycling stickers on the recycling containers. The amount of material actually did increase for most of the containers after the stickers were on. There was pollution incurred by creating the stickers, but there was also likely even more harm avoided by having more material recycled instead of virgin material being mined and processed. Reminds me of the gov't people who left the Bush Administration because of all the environmental issues being worsened by Bush/Cheney. Those people who value the environment (which includes our air, water, and soil, as well as the same and habitat for animals) are the people we need more of in gov't. By leaving the gov't they aren't able to make things better than they'd otherwise be. .....*It's important to keep caring about the things that matter, and to make them better than they'd otherwise be*... Now, lets focus on understanding, and see how we can reduce the harms. If it weren't for folks who care, things would be much much worse. It's up to us to keep things from slipping into oblivion, or to try try even more and make things go in a good direction - " kiwi2000 " <kiwi2000 <vegan-network > Thursday, July 11, 2002 6:21 PM Re: [100% veg*n ] noire ou blanc? > How's that? > - > Ashley Hooper > vegan-network > Thursday, July 11, 2002 12:09 PM > [100% veg*n ] noire ou blanc? > > > > >I'm not judging or saying that meat eaters are Nazis. > >To me murder is murder.
