This could also be herpes which you can get in other ways besides direct contact with another person. There are natural remedies like lemon balm or something with tannin in it. Drugstores

have tannin topical medication. See a dermatologist. Health food store have lemon balm.

It could also be the toothpaste you are using which can be very caustic if you don't rinse it off you mouth completely.

Advice?

I asked this on another list when I meant to ask on this one. I recently changed to a vegan diet and it is going even better than I had hoped. All of a sudden, however, I am getting cracking on my lips at the sides of my mouth and I never had this before. These cracks in my lips are sore. I was wondering if this could have something to do with the change in diet. How can I put this delicately? These cracks in my lips are not due to contact with another person because I am celibate, which is probably more than anyone wants to know <grin>.To send an email to -

Hi Cynthia,

I'm a strict vegetarian in that I eat only fruits and vegies ... no salt, no fat, no sugar and no grains. If I eat any kind of concentrated fat, my face tends to break out and I get canker sores in my mouth. I can't even eat an avocado without getting adverse results by morning. You are not alone ... I'm celibate too ... solves lots of problems, doesn't it?

In health ... Werner.

Hi Cynthia

I would say you are going short of vitamin B. Try eating wholegrain rice,

bread etc. and supplement with vitamin B complex or brewer's yeast.

I would attribute this to perhaps missing the omega oils, omega-3 in particular

is the one that is less abundant in the vegan diet. I have seen a few vegans

with this.

Flaxseed oil and hemp oil are good sources. Try a little bit mixed into your

porridge with sultanas and sliced banana, and stir it in good before you add the

white stuff which we can't refer to as milk because some farmers might get

upset.

I've been a vegan for just about 10 days now and I'm doing pretty

good. The trouble I'm having is that I'm very busy (I work full-time

and go to school full-time), so I don't have time to cook. The result

is that I'm mostly eating foods that don't meet my nutritional needs at

all. Does anyone have this same problem, and, if so, how do you

address it?

I have somewhat the same problem. So when I do get

the chance to cook, I usually cook enough for several

days and I freeze some as well.

Hi,

I have the same problem of being busy and not having

time to cook. My solution is to cook one or two big

meals a week (normally on the weekend) and eat

leftovers most of the week (either freeze or

refrigerate). This may seem obvious, but I also by

lots of fruit or other healthy snacks (hummus,

carrots, etc). This helps me avoid eating fries and

drinking coke.

good luck!

On the weekend, I'll cook a big pot of lentils, rice or barley, and buy a bunch of produce, which I will proceed to wash and chop (if necessary). Then throughout the week, it's easy to mix a few things together and be on my way. Here are some examples of what I do:

~combine lentils with a can of beans, add chopped avocado, tomato & onion, top with red wine vinegar

~heat some brown rice and top with salsa, a can of black beans, some onion

~stir fry some (already chopped) veggies and serve over the lentils/barley/etc

~throw some lentils in a pita pocket and top with fresh veggies

~mix together pre-packaged lettuce mix with fresh veggies, top with lentils/barley and a can of beans for a great entree salad

I'm not a fan of soup, but if you like it, making a garbage soup with the leftover veggies from the week would be a fantastic way to use up the leftovers. The broth can be used to cook some of the barley/lentil/rice in, plus you could easily add potatoes and make it a side dish with any entree.

Hope this gives you a few ideas!

Other healthy snacks I like to keep around: nuts, sunflower or pumpkin

seeds, sesame sticks, dried and fresh fruit, precut veggies and dip. I

also cook main dishes in large portions so they last for several days.

My recipe for homemade hummus, which is good as a spread or dip:

15 oz. can chickpeas, drained

1/4 c. tahini

juice of one lemon

1-3 cloves garlic

1 tsp. cumin

1/2 tsp. paprika

1/2 tsp. salt

Blend in a food processor, with enough water to make creamy

consistency. Most of the ingredients can be varied to taste. Sometimes

I add scallions or fresh herbs too.

I am trying to eat vegan. The rest of the family isn't interested. So what

I have been doing is cooking a couple of things like soup and a casserole

and I eat those with whatever veggies and salad by family is having.
