Hi Angie!!

I think one of the reasons I find it so difficult to explain to

people why I'm vegan is because it seems so logical to me.

I had heard that Nottingham was good - I have only been to the

football and cricket grounds there but now my parents only live half

an hours drive away I really should take the time to explore!

Hello!

My name is Kathleen, a.k.a Nature. I'm 32 years old today!

I am from Minnesota!

And as for bananas, I like them best when they are just getting brown

spots on them. :)

I've been vegetarian for 17 years, on a dare from my sister, she'd

quit smoking, and I'd become vegetarian. :)

Happy Birthday. Hope you had a wonderful day. Mine is Monday. Don't those

birthdays come around to often.

That is great that a dare lead to a more healthy lifestyle for both of you.

Welcome to all the new members. You've found a great place for wonderful

recipes and fun chat about cooking and health. Share your recipes and join in.

Don't forget to check out the files for all the recipes that folks on here

share. Chanda and Donna are great at filing them into catagories so they are

easier to find.

Yours to Enjoy,

Hello Amos and welcome to the Garden! Congratulations on your choice of

vegetarianism and the group. You'll find the group to be incredibly supportive

and not prone to the conflicts found in other groups. (Non veggie groups; I

wonder if it is the meat that makes some people less than charming.)

So wonderful to have you here! Jeanne in GA

add a little as well. Thank you all for letting me interupt your day.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I am surprised that alkaline

vegetarian is not a common term here, lol. I have not heard it before

either. I just decided to catagorize myself because we live in a

world were everything must be in a catagory. Anyway, I follow the

alkaline approach outlined by Dr. Robert O. Young. About 80% of my

diet contains alkalizing foods and beverages. In some respects it is

more strict than vegan. Hopes this answers your question Beth and

anyone else who may have been wondering.

Have a great day!

I am still new to this so I will not try to get into the details too

much, but here is a brief synopsis. Basically, most health problems

stem from having a ph that is too acidic. I can't remember what the

ideal ph for the blood is. Being out ot balance, too acidic, causes

many problems including but not limited to: fat acumulation, dry

skin, alergies, cronic sickness, infections-viral and bacterial,

malnutrition, cancer, and lack of energy. Of course, our highly

processed diet contributes to this condition along with eating foods

that are fermented, contain fungus, contain high amounts of sugar,

non-whole grains, and of course meats and dairy. My diet consists of

about 80% akaline and 20% acid. I feel that I am still cleaning my

system out so I can not describe what the end results are like. I

feel 100% healthier than before, I have more energy, and I have lost

around 10 pounds without changing anything but my diet. I apologize

for this long post, but it is also quite short of what it needs to be

to fully describe this approach. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask

more questions if any arise.

Hi Sonal -

Welcome to Vegan UK. I'm sure some of the regulars will be along

shortly.

I guess it should be pretty easy to " veganize " most Indian recipes ?

Use tofu for paneer, use soya milk/yoghurt/cream instead of their

dairy equivalents, margarine instead of ghee, etc ?

Hi,

Can I invite you to our Vegparents group on ?

This might help you get together with other veggie and vegan families in

your area (most of the members live in London and the South east, certainly

several are from East London and I am sure some would be willing to meet

with you). I live in SW London, but we are organising two vegan picnic meet

ups in central London this Summer, one especially for veggie and vegan

families, which will be on 3rd August, and one on 22nd June, very soon, not

just families but families are especially welcome. You can see my posting

about it about three days ago on this group.

Let us know if you can come to one or both, thanks.

> Hi, Paul! Thanks for extending a 'welcome' to me!Possibly, contrary

to what you think, its quite difficult to 'veganize' Indian recipes,

while being in India.'While being in India' means that while I am

here I can do so quite easily; also there are not large no.of

Indians here to whom I need to address this issue. But when I'll

return to India, I'll face this problem at two levels-1)

unavailability of tofu, soya milk, margarine at majority of the

grocery stores.Infact, so many cities do not have tofu at all in

their shops; very, very few would be keeping things like

margarine,etc.2)the level of culture.Milk is ingrained in Indian

culture, to a great extent. Its very difficult to convince people to

look at their cultural things from a fresh perspective.Eg., the

temple Hindus go to(a large no. of Indians are Hindus) give

nonvegan ' prasad'( a thing to be eaten; its considered holy/

sacred.),cow's milk is given in lot of herbal type of medicines,

i.e., though those medicines may be purely vegan but they are

supposed to be had with milk, the first thing what many Indian kids

get right in the morning is a glass of milk( this glass of milk is

not really considered a part of breakfast!Somewhat, similar to

adults' bed-tea!),Indian parties/ get-togethers are considered

incomplete without atleast one dish being made from 'paneer', i.e.

Indian cottage cheese,Indians, largely speaking, thrive on

sweets.'Sweets' connotes somewhat like baklawa( do u know what's

that?)of Middle East.We have a wide, wide variety of sweets

actually. All, or nearlly all, of them are made from milk( the way

cakes abound in variety in West, same is the case with our sweets!

May be, more!); infact, many of them are made from that type of a

milk product which can't be replicated with soya milk(I do keep on

trying on this front.Uptill now,I've just been able to veganise one

popular sweet. What my concern is that vegan alternatives should be

there for all those super-hit sweets( which can be compared to say a

chocolate cake here!I mean that popular among Indians; so that their

weakness for that particular sweet is effectively handled.) Its

been a long mail!Bye for now!

Hi,

No, it was not me who donated the shoes to London Vegans, although I was at

that meeting (Vanessa was not there that time). I don't know who donated the

shoes because there were quite a lot of people I don't know there. I'm not a

regular at London Vegans as I also live quite far out on the outer edge of

London, and usually try to do more with veggies and vegans around my area,

and help with Vegancampaigns from time to time (not much spare time left for

London Vegans)

I would just bring about enough food for what would be the usual amount for

yourself (and your family if they come), maybe a little bit more to share,

hope to see you all at one of the picnics.

The second picnic is especially for the families to get together, but I am

not sure how many are coming along yet. At that one we hope to do a bit of

filming of veggie and vegan families for putting a very short film onto

Veggievision. The first picnic is more of a mixed and inclusive one, with at

least ourselves and one other family going, and quite a few other people.

It's up to you which you come to or both, I do believe especially that it is

very important for veggie and vegan families to have more opportunities to

meet and support one another, it's good having like-minded friends at all

stages in life but when you are a vegan parent, I think we have extra

challenges sometimes that most vegan non-parents cannot relate to,

children's parties, attitudes from people at children's schools and

nurseries, etc, where you are usually the only vegans. It is so important at

this stage in life not to be isolated from others in the same position.

I'll invite you to the now,

Lesley

Welcome Sarah!

Deborah (on the west coast of Canada)

I've just joined the group so wish to say " Hello " to you all. I live in

the southeast of England and have been vegan for about eighteen years.

I look forward to chatting with the group.
