Guest guest Report post Posted June 1, 2004 Is 'nutritional yeast' & brewer's yeast the same thing? If not, can I use Brewer's yeast in place of nutritional yeast? Beth, I have a fried who tried to make a " cheese " sauce using Brewer's yeast instead of the nutritional yeast and she said it tasted so horribly bitter and disgusting. She was scared for some time to try any more nutritional yeast recipes until I explained that Brewer's and nutritional yeast were quite different. Nutritional yeast is a nutty flavored, non-active yeast that is used by vegans in uncheese recipes. It is a good vegan source of vitamin B12. You can find it at a health food store. Whole Foods carries large canisters of KAL brand. You can order it from Walnut Acres, 800.433.3998, http://www.walnutacres.com. Yeah, my dh and I used to add it to our morning blended breakfast until we found a good source of nutritional yeast. It works just fine as long as you have some sweetener in there as well. Try it once and see - then throw it out after you're sure and certain that it's not for you ;=) Or of course, please yourself. Don't know why I'm preaching about it.
