Does anyone know of particular herbs that can significantly elevate serum

potassium levels? Thanks!

What is the effect of Gan cao on potassium levels of the body?

How about Bai shao?

(thinking Shao yao gan cao tang).

How about diuretics and the effect on potassium levels?

I gave Shen qi wan to a patient a few months ago for KD Qi/Yang xu which

worked wonders for 2 weeks and then she got calf cramps, which stopped

immediately after discontinuing the formula.

I have a patient who came in yesterday with the opposite.... high levels of

potassium, along with adrenal insufficiency diagnosed by MD.

Her TCM diagnosis was KD and HT disharmony.... fatigue, anxiety, stress,

light sleeper etc, Pulse: thready HT and KD, Tongue:, pale and thin,

redder at the tip,

Hara reflexes: Ren 14, KD 16, Ren 6 pressure pain.

Herbs to worry about for high potassium levels ?

Dear John,

Gan Cao contains glycyrrhizin which increases extracellular fluid, sodium

retention and loss of potassium.  Diuretic info can be found at

http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/diuretics.html as not all have a direct

effect on potassium loss.

Ace inhibitors can increase the blood potassium.  Typically, when potassium is

elevated sodium will be deficient.

Warmly,

Dianne
