good point about the temperature difference of these two herbs.

zhi shi is bitter, while ma huang is mainly spicy. However,

pharmacologically, they may have similar metabolic action.

Searching medline for proof of synephrine's weight loss effects

has not yet been successful, but I did stumble across

something very interesting. Synephrine is a fairly potent

treatment for incontinence. Like ephedrine, it restores bladder

tone. We also know of zhi shi's effect at promoting bowel

movements. I wonder if it actually restores bowel tone, unlike da

huang, fan xie ye and lu hui, which destroy it over time. After all,

synephrine is sympathomimetic and smooth muscle is smooth

muscle. (sympathomimetics tone smooth muscle in general).

Has anyone heard of using zhi shi for incontinence. what might

the TCM pathomechanism be?

Tod,

In my experience,

zhi shi for continence because they controle nausea ( digestion),

not for incontinence, they are similar to orange character, they use for

lung's problem more then bow movement, I use to forbid my patients of

using orange while they have constipation, in contrary to MD Western

way, who used to give their patients advice of using orange.I tell you

the story: Ten years ago, I have one nice who 5 years old, had problem

of constipation in critical condition. one time I come to visit her

family, I asked them, what they gave to their baby to eat during the

day, they say: carrot, orange, and prune. Those kinds extremely against

of my treatment for constipation, they told me that their MD told them

using those for their baby. I told them to stop all of those : orange,

carrot, and prune. I also tell them to use a lot of lime juice, after

that the baby was getting better.

Carrot is controlling character, good for blood

Orange has same character but good for lung

Prune is incontinence, but be careful, only for a while, if using it

too many times , the intestine become paralyze for a while then it make

constipation again. These three of those I never use for my patients,

and completely in my treatment, they 're not allow to touch them. I

often treat many serious cases of constipations, a lot of my patients,

they have conspitation in all their lifers, 75 years olds, 65 years old

and more. I wonder why they have constipation all their life? - "

because of the MD advice: eat carrote, orange, prune " That why.
