Guest guest
Ien - I read this *surefire* so they say - way to get rid of bears - place urinal cakes around the perimeter of your property - supposedly they wont cross 'cause of the smell. Ivy oh - I haven't actually *tried* this, but it sounds good.

We collected 'roo droppings, dropped them into a bucket of water and after a few days used the water to spray those plants we didn't want to share. The 'roos never went near these plants again but browsed happily on the unsprayed ones! If bear droppings are easy to find I imagine the spray would work well. Guest guest
It doesn't work on Michigan bears. A friend's brother-in-law is a state trooper just north-west of Grayling somewhere and sent our friend a page from the newspaper with pictures showing what happened when a bear or bears got into a port-a-john rental place. It wasn't a pretty sight ! It may have been that the bears were used to the smell of the cakes. Guest guest
<If bear droppings are easy to find I imagine the spray would work well.> Interesting notions. I usually find a few good turds a year. I always put them on the compost heap so I can tell people I grow my vegs with bear manure. Alas, in our on-going struggle to keep DEER out of the garden we have found that they really are quite clever, and sooner or later figure out what is truly a deterrent and what is just humans bluffing. Some people swore by packets of soap hanging from bushes, in other gardens the deer cheerfully ate the soap before moving on to the garden. Bags of hair used to be a favourite deterrent. These days the deer are no longer scared of people with hair attached, let alone just hair. Animals LEARN. As one oldtimer told me: In the old days the only people who went out into the bush were hunters and prospectors and they carried GUNS. These days everybody and his brother goes into the mountains and they carry LUNCH. The bears have figured that out. Guest guest
Try dog hair. Works pretty good with deer around here.
