Guest guest
There is no appreciable difference between the two, except that the red contains furocoumarins and the green does not. I have met several aromatherapy " formulators " who have vehemently insisted that green mandarin EO is the " only safe mandarin " to use on children's skin, but that is absolutely untrue... unless said children are going to be running about in the sun, but that goes for adult red mandarin users as well. Guest guest
>There is no appreciable difference between the two,< There is a huge difference in fragrance. There are also differences in composition but of course not much in the major chemicals which is all most AT teachers know about. >I have met several aromatherapy " formulators " who have vehemently< >insisted that green mandarin EO is the " only safe mandarin " < Well whoever they are clearly are talking out of their arses and know zilch. Probably because they are not proper trained cosmetic formulators but rather amateurs who have picked up what they know from newsgroups or from the trades novels, or from their know nothing teachers which the AT is packed with. Red mandarin is NOT a photosensitiser under normal conditions of use. Anyone who has my safety manual can see the references on that. On my website is an article covering photo sensitisation under abnormal conditions. If green mandarin contains higher levels of furocoumarins I can't find at the moment even though I have analysis of dozens of mandarin oils. Reason is the bergaptens do not come out with routine analysis as they are held in sticky waxes that would clog up the GLC column. Therefore, specialist analysis is required and few places do that. I am sure someone has got it somewhere though. I have never seen a report on green mandarin being a photosensitiser, but as it is an ingredient of perfumes I am sure it will have been tested by the big boys in-house. Chances are that information is in the RIFM private database which only members get access to. Another fact is that often citrus oils are distilled, but are resold as " cold pressed " by con artists in the wholesale or production trades and then in turn by the aromatherapy suppliers who seem to believe everything they are told! If they are distilled they are in fact far safer for skin use.
