Guest guest
Hi all - I received a call today from the wife of a veteran (whom I haven't seen yet - this is just to get me past the whew-I'm-willing-to-try-if-only-I-can-find-a-place-to-start stage). He's 56yo and has compression fractures in his spine from severe osteoporosis. Apparently the bones are so fragile that he can reach for a tissue and get a fracture. Docs don't know what has caused it, nor can they find anything that slows the bone loss, nevermind help him recover. He's on oxycontin and morphine, and is in such pain that he can't sit/stand/walk for any length of time. Apparently his weight is now 118 pounds. The wife thinks this is the result of his exposure to chemicals used to clean uniforms of Agent Orange that polluted the ground water of the US base he was stationed at over 20 years ago. (Interesting side note: she also asked about treatment for her daughter who has chronic inflamed joints and digestive problems painful enough that she sometimes has trouble standing up - as does the mom. I didn't quite ask her if she and her daughter drank that water, but...) He also has some sort of inflammatory arterial disease, more information to come. I can get him started on some pain management treatment, but I'm a bit overwhelmed at where to go after that. Kidneys? Jing? some lingering pathogenic factor? I need help jump-starting my thinking on this; if people are interested, I'll post more info as I get it. thanks so much. k Karen R. Guest guest
Get him tested for radioactivity, see if chelation is called for. This could be a serious toxicity. --- On Fri, 5/8/09, turusachan <turusachan wrote: turusachan <turusachan fascinating and overwhelming case study - advice needed Chinese Medicine Friday, May 8, 2009, 7:35 PM Hi all - I received a call today from the wife of a veteran (whom I haven't seen yet - this is just to get me past the whew-I'm-willing- to-try-if- only-I-can- find-a-place- to-start stage). Guest guest
Hi Karen, Immediately, have him start taking magnesium glycinate at least 400mg 3x daily. I found a wonderful company that sells pharmaceutical grade nutriceuticals and their site address is www.purecaps.com Magnesium delivers calcium to the bones, removes plaques from the vessels (it acts as a calcium channel blocker), it relaxes muscle spasms, it induces deep sleep, and it supports the liver, all of which should be very helpful for getting your patient to slow down on this tragic runaway train that he's on. As far as herbs go, though it sounds like he was exposed to serious toxins, you need to slowly build up his qi blood and of course yin, to give him the strength to rebuild. But be careful, I have treated patients who were seriously qi ,blood and yin vacuous, and unless you first support the spleen, he may develop diarrhea, especially since he already has digestive difficulties. Based upon his tongue and pulses, I would consider, as I said, first, strengthening his spleen and calming his liver. A nice way to do that which complements beautifully the magnesium, is to start with a small dose of Shao Yao Gan Cao wan, to relax the muscles, and calm the liver. Good luck. May you merit to help this suffering soul look forward to life! --- On Fri, 5/8/09, turusachan <turusachan wrote: turusachan <turusachan fascinating and overwhelming case study - advice needed Chinese Medicine Friday, May 8, 2009, 4:35 PM Hi all - I received a call today from the wife of a veteran (whom I haven't seen yet - this is just to get me past the whew-I'm-willing- to-try-if- only-I-can- find-a-place- to-start stage).
