Ethics of sharing downloaded e-book files?

a colleague has approached me about sharing the cost of a $50 e-book

download & printing/copying on an out of print book. we figured by sharing

the cost we'd pay approx $25 ea. i am concerned about the ethics of file

sharing intellectual property. the book is out of print, but the author

offers the download for $50. (this is TCM material).

what do you think about downloading one copy, and then printing copies for 3

practitioners? ethical or no can do?

If the work is under copyright, copying a whole book this way would

be an infringement of copyright, and unethical. (not an expert, but

it seems clear to me, unless I am missing something...)

It's simply wrong to deprive and artist of income for the work they've

generated. If it has value to you, then you should pay asking price

for it. It's straight forward ans simple.

Hi Kath,

Sure, you can forward my post to your colleagues. But could I

encourage you also to not be afraid to just stand on your own

beliefs? Just tell them YOU feel it is unethical. That's good

enough - no further 'evidence' is necessary!

I appreciate your many contributions to the group.

with support,

RoseAnne

this is what i ended up doing. the colleague seemed fine with a simple " i

did some digging and it's an illegal practice " . i appreciate your

encouragement.
