This was the first day of the 'sentencing' hearing. Two of my posts, one written the day before the hearing and the other the day after, are run beneath this e-mail. The second post went up this morning on Age of Autism and can still be seen there. I received no offers to distribute copies of Silenced Witnesses or to help fund the books printers payment as a consequence of my last e-mail. I understand this completely, my list is small and after the last two years of the Hearing, many of you have given money to contribute to my work on behalf of the parents and their vaccine damaged children. However, if any of you have any way of communicating this appeal to any other lists or well-off individuals, please pass it on. Since my last e-mail I have received the account from the printers, which shows that even with another generous loan of £1,000 from CryShame, Slingshot Publications still owes £1,300. The two Silenced Witnesses books are presently the only organised presentation of the voice of the parents with vaccine damaged children, whose case should have been heard in the High Court as a claim against the three vaccine companies that produced MMR. Together with Alan Goldings films, in which Dr Wakefied puts his case, the books are the best record of the dirty tricks campaign organised by the British Government and their allies in the pharmaceutical companies. Sales and distribution of the books represents a small step on the way to mobilising people to fight on behalf of Dr Wakefield, Professor Murch and Professor Walker-Smith. If you can't afford to donate to the publication of the books, please use any influence you have to try and get organisations to buy bulk copies or individuals and groups to distribute them. Negotiations over price of bulk orders or new ways of distributing the books can be carried out via www.slingshotpublications.com. Truth becomes completely irrelevant. We can freely say there is no truth. In the place of truth, we consume ideas from a huge marketplace of messages and narratives that we believe in without any immediate experience or judgment as to their truthfulness. As Goebbels might say today, " If you repeat the message frequently enough it becomes the truth " . Aleksandar Maãaðev on Goebbels When in 2007, I attended the first day of Dr Andrew Wakefield's General Medical Council (GMC) Fitness to Practice Hearing, Miss Smith the senior GMC prosecutor, stated quite clearly that the Hearing would last around three months. Now in April 2010 the GMC is about to begin the discussion of 'retribution'. Although most of the media, including rabid pharma shills on their blog sites, profess the view that by the end of this week the GMC will be concluding it's deliberations, even the most casual observer will have picked up the fact that this part of the Hearing will last another two and a half months, ending some time in June or July. The hearing, apart from becoming the longest quasi judicial hearing in history, has cost Britain's doctors between four and ten million pounds sterling. Its duration, its cost, and the relentless pharmagov propaganda campaign that has accompanied it have distracted the public gaze from vitally important issues such as: the only person in Britain, to complain to the GMC about the three doctors on trial was the Sunday Times journalist Brian Deer; the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industries (ABPI) played a part in putting the complaint to the GMC; the Chair of the Panel hearing the complaint had shares in Glaxo Smith Kline the vaccine manufacturers; in 1993 a group of parents began preparing a legal claim against three companies of vaccine producers - this case was destroyed by the British government in 2003, when legal aid was withdrawn; the Urabe strain MMR vaccine, introduced by the UK government even when they knew it could be damaging, was withdrawn by the government in 1992 without a word about compensation for the many children they had seriously damaged; finally the prosecution in the Hearing has lied for two and a half years about the Lancet paper, saying that it was the result of a research project, that entailed experiments on autistic children, carried out without research ethical committee approval, when in fact it was a case-review paper citing 12 children who attended the Royal Free Hospital and were tested entirely for clinical-diagnostic reasons. All the discussion in the Hearing over the next two and a half months will now be predicated on the already 'proved' guilt and dishonesty of the three defendants. No new evidence will be introduced and there will be no collective protest about the January verdict or it's aftermath, by either the defendants or their lawyers. In fact their lawyers, although reeling in shock from the Panels 'misreading' of the evidence are now giving the usual gilt-edged reassurances that everything will be fine on appeal - another year down the line. A statement that is a euphemism for 'We're sorry we messed up, but there is still some possibility of justice and definitely still money in the bank for us'. There is of course, no possibility of a resurrection of Dr Wakefield's character or his scientific career. Not solely the Hearing but as well the insidious campaign organised by the New Labour government, the pharmaceutical industry and the paediatric establishment, has seen to that. I attended every day, bar one or two, of Part One of the almost three year hearing. I sat in the Hearing room and I reported back on every day, for the parents of vaccine damaged children. During all this time, my core view of the circus never wavered. The hearing, I was sure, was a show trial staged over a protracted period, to protect the governments vaccine programme, ensure pharmaceutical profits and perhaps with the darker programme of making invisible, in Britain at least, all vaccine damage. The idea of a government that can make invisible over 2,000 damaged children for the sake of profit and expediency, will always appear bewildering to those who believe in the kind of democracy that we are supposed to have in the UK and the US. Those of us living in representative democracies, are however, facing a new and very frightening phenomena. While in all previous vaccine controversies in the UK, such as those in the nineteen seventies over whooping cough vaccine, there always appeared a degree of intellectual honesty on the part of those scientists and politicians involved; now those who dissent are truly up against the wall. In our new corporate society there is to be no mention at all of vaccine damage - it is verboten, it no longer exists. I am really glad to see that Dr Wakefield is now issuing statements about the 'political' nature of the whole hearing, and the two decade long assault on his character and reputation. He is an amazingly strong individual with a cast-iron and very English belief in ethics, the idea of public service, and a deep rooted emotional empathy with patients and parents. Although it's difficult, given the dedicated and very able nature of Professor Simon Murch and Professor Walker-Smith, we might be slightly critical of both them and their counsel for refusing to even consider the political lessons of this affair. For me, the idea of sitting through another two and a half months of the lawyers conceding like dashboard 'nodding dogs', the guilt of their clients, while pocking their fees would I'm afraid be too rich for my constitution. Equally the idea of parents and families whose lives are already full and traumatised, being sucked into increasing physical protest against the Hearing inside the GMC itself, unaided by any professionals or eminent figures is very worrying. This situation was one of the only ones I have ever met in my life of para-legal campaigning work, where it might be suggested that had the defendants stuck together, had their lawyers stood with them and had they boycotted the proceedings while continuing a very public collective campaign against the GMC, a victory might just have been possible . Nevertheless, the parents and the doctors still need support. For my part I am continuing with the production of Silenced Witnesses Vol III, these books, written by the parents, that I have edited and published are emerging as the clear voice of the parents. As well, we must all keep going back to the beginning, to an analysis of the Urabe strain MMR vaccination and the 1998 Lancet paper. I have to say, that even after almost 40 years of consistent political campaigning, I am staggered by the lies, distortion, propaganda and disinformation that have disguised the case-review paper that became the centre of the GMC prosecution. All of which goes to support the fact that Britain now has a corporate government that increasingly sails close to fascism. The GMC hearing brings to mind the quotation wrongly attributed to Goebbels, 'The bigger the lie, the more it will be believed,' and exactly fits my perception of other of his quotes, such as; 'Propaganda must label events and people with distinctive phrases or slogans' (consider the term 'maverick' to describe Dr Wakefield) and Goebbels definitive statement, that could have been a reflection on the constant reports of dangerous measles outbreaks in Britain; 'Propaganda to the home front must create an optimum anxiety level' For my entire report of the GMC Hearing, readers can go to: http://www.cryshame.com For my essays, The Complainant and An Interest in Conflict readers can go to: http://www.slingshotpublications.com For my articles and essays following the 'verdict' in January 2010 readers can go to: http://ageofautism.com (scroll down left hand edge of page to Dr Andrew Wakefield) For the investigative writing of John Stone about the case of Dr Wakefield do the same. Thomas Francis Meagher 1846. (1) Chief Prosecutor Smith, yesterday asked for the most severe sanction to be levied against Dr Wakefield and Professor Walker-Smith, in the resumed second part of the GMC Fitness to Practice Hearing taking place in London. The day was quiet outside the building. Where on previous first days there had been crowds of parents, there were now only two journalists self censured in a small railed paddock. Inside, the cavernous glass building there was no doubt that they were expecting trouble. Having seen the television film of the revolution in Kyrgyzstan and recognising the similarities in their corrupt judicial procedures, the GMC had employed security guards who sat guarding the door to the Hearing and public gallery. As expected Miss Smith called for the 'erasure' of Dr Wakefield from the Medical Register due to the number and severity of the charges that accounted singularly and cumulatively as Serious Professional Misconduct. Despite the fact that Professor Walker-Smith has been retired for some years after having been one of the most respected European paediatric gastroenterologists and despite the fact that he had only seen children for clinical reasons and despite the fact that he carried no 'invasive procedures' on any of the children in the Lancet paper, Smith also called for his erasure from the Medical Register. In her Machiavellian manner Smith suggested that to give Walker-Smith a lesser sentence would leave children at risk. She didn't state which children would be at risk, but as Walker-Smith is now retired from clinical medicine, we have to assume they would be ones that he came across in the park or the local high street. Smith stressed that Walker-Smith's erasure was important to assure the public that the medical profession take these charges seriously. What of course she didn't say but which was completely true, was that had the Panel only admonished Walker-Smith, the public and the lawyers would have been able to ask how Wakefield had been able to commit all the iniquities he was charged with single-handed. In order to win the day, Smith has always had to brand Wakefield and Walker-Smith with the same iron. This is ironic considering that both defendants had many evident disagreements and some disliking for each other. Smith suggested that Prof. Murch whilst subordinate to Prof. Walker-Smith might have used his consultant status to make his own decisions regarding the treatment of the children. However, Smith suggested that perhaps the panel might be more lenient with Professor Murch and simply suspend him for a period if he shows sufficient contrition. Again this is a bizarre and dark suggestion in light of the fact that it was Professor Murch who actually carried out the 'invasive' procedures which were at the heart of the case. In saying this, I am not being critical of Professor Murch, who all the parents know acted clinically, at all times, with ethical correctness. In preparing her ground Smith repeatedly referred, with the coinage of hypocrisy that is her staple expression, to the damage done to Public Health by the defendants. She also kept afloat the lie - one of the main pillars of the prosecution case - that the children cited in the Lancet paper were not ill and did not arrive at the Royal Free Hospital with clinical symptoms. Those who know even a little about this faux trial will know that this prosecution assertion has been the seminal reason why their parents were never called to give evidence. In effect, Smith has spent two and a half years accusing the parents of vaccine damaged children, of ignorance about their children, of lying, of demanding useless invasive procedures, of having neurotic disorders, and of being gulled at the expense of their children by the charismatic Dr Wakefield. The question of why no parents were called, however, hangs like a spectre equally over the defence council. Nothing that has happened, so far, has riled any of the defence council sufficiently to fight back on behalf of their clients. Nothing, it seems, dampens their essentially cheery disposition while the lives and professional reputations of their three clients hang in the balance. Brian Deer, the Sunday Times columnist, often referred to by parents as the 'little man', arrived soon after the start of proceedings, having presumably wanted to miss expected demonstrations. Deer, the main architect of the character assassination of Dr Wakefield, imagines that there will be pandemonium when the doctors are struck off. In this opinion he shows the usual low level of understanding of the parents and defendants, who have always behaved with courtesy and intelligence, despite being deprived of research hopes for the treatment of their desperately damaged children. When Smith wound up the morning session at 11.45, Kieran Coonan proposed that the hearing should resume at 2.15, which would give him sufficient time to get through his brief submissions, about which he was going to seek advice from Dr Wakefield. After a two and half hour lunch break, Coonan confirmed that he had been instructed by Wakefield to make no submissions to the Hearing and that he had nothing to add to the stinking landfill Smith had put forward that morning. The next sitting day will be next Tuesday when Mr Miller, counsel for Professor Walker-Smith, will have character witnesses arriving from America. Their evidence will take one to one and a half days (in Standard GMC Time [sGMCT] this converts into around two months including short post-Easter breaks and time off for participants to consult with other share-holders and stock-brokers). Prof. Murch's character witnesses will attend on the following Friday. (1) Speeches from the dock. M. H. Gill and Son.1910.
