When I relax at the end of another day of work and mothering, these are the thoughts that crowd back in: “Where can I plant calendula? What about a mulberry tree? Who would be happy as a climbing vine on that archway?“Through the spring rains and winds, I've been marvelling as the landscape emerges from brown to green, bursting with chickweed, nettles, daffodils, cherry tree blossoms. The first of our new lemon balm and motherwort beds transplanted last fall are peeking up. Red Moon Herbs has a new section of the “Forest Garden” at Earthaven to cultivate (see photos). Seedlings and cuttings are basking inside my living room windows--St. Johnswort, yarrow, wormwood, skullcap, catnip...I’m delighted that Susun Weed will be returning to the Southeast Women’s Herbal Conference this fall! See below for her article, "Chickweed is a Star," Chickweed is the first herb we harvest each spring. Our early spring harvest also includes Liferoot, which looks similar to a dandelion (some of our customers use Liferoot to support libido and the hormonal system). Soon to follow are Nettle in April and Mugwort in May, the other ingredients in our Strong Bones Vinegar. All of these are spring herbs included in our Spring Specials, below.May your April be blessed with a little bit of spring fever too!~ Corinna Announcing the 2009 Southeast Women's Herbal Conference!by Ema Carmona, Conference CoordinatorOctober 2-4 2009, Black Mountain, NCJoin us! And if you look in between them, with luck, you'll see a bright green creeping plant low to the ground with little white starry flowers: chickweed, a good friend of mine.I say she's a star, because her botanical name -- Stellaria media -- means little stars. And because she really stars at helping us when we need to gently dissolve something or to cool off inflamed tissues. Chickweed not only effects physical health, she is a psychic healer too. She opens us up to cosmic energies and gives us the inner strength we need to handle those energies.Chickweed contains soapy substances, called saponins. Saponins, like soap, emulsify and increase the permeability of cellular membranes. When we consume chickweed those saponins increase our ability to absorb nutrients, especially minerals. They also dissolve and break down unwanted matter, including disease-causing bacteria, cysts, benign tumors, thickened mucus in the respiratory and digestive systems, and excess fat cells. For the rest of Susun’s article, see: http://www.susunweed.com/Article_Chickweed-A-Star.htm Get your 2009 CatalogThe 2009 Red Moon Herbs catalogs are printed, with photos of the medicines and drawings of the plants.
