Guest guest
I do not mean for this to sound trivial, but, I seem to remember from my acupuncture student days that rumor had it that pulse quality could predict the gender of a baby . All I seem to remember is that a tight or wiry pulse indicated a boy, whereas a slippery pulse predicted a girl. Using this as a guideline I have been correct 5 out of 5 times...but that may have been purely coincidental. The reason I ask at this time is that two of the women are pregnant again and clamoring for me to " do it again " . (these have all been friends and not patients!)... Now it has become a matter of curiosity to me, and I got to wondering if any in this esteemed group has ever heard of such a thing or if there is anything written on the subject. I do remember that the pulse is supposed to become more slippery with pregnancy, due to the increased blood and fluids. In the 5 cases there were 4 women with very wiry pulses who had boys, and one who had a decidedly slippery pulse and had a girl. What do you think? I am curious to know what information is floating around out there if any. R. Cooper
Guest guest
Hi R., I've had several teachers that were are able to do this with pretty good accuracy, although my current teacher is perhaps the best. As the left pulse belongs to Yin and the right to Yang, if the left if more slippery and " jumpy " (dong4 or cu4 in Chinese) then he says girl, and if the right is more slippery and jumpy then he guesses boy. He also checks what he calls the Shenmen pulse, the pulse felt over Shenmen/Heart 7(?) for these qualities. Lastly he checks the pulses that can be felt on the raidlal and ulnar aspects of the middle finger for these qualities, as well as for location- the more distal the pulse can be felt, the farther along the pregnancy. I've been fairly accurate using this method, but still don't consider my successful predictions to be statistically significant, and feel that I may just be lucky at guessing. Guest guest
Yes, there is some material about it, the one i have is in Spanish though, and it says that if the pregnant woman has a yang pulse, the baby will be boy, ie. superficial, stronger in cun, stronger in the left hand. Of course these are 3 different systems, so you can check by checking in which hand the pulse is stronger and in which position and (if you wish) is it superficial or deep... But the author warns that the pregnancy should be past the first trimester otherwise it is impossible. Following this simple system i have never been wrong, Hope it helps Juan El Monday 29 October 2007 00:22:47 rcooper1us escribió: > I do not mean for this to sound trivial, but, I seem to remember from my > acupuncture student days that rumor had it that pulse quality could > predict the gender of a baby . Guest guest
Hi Juan, Interesting that in the system you describe the left pulse is designated Yang and the right Yin. I've never seen this before. Of course, in Chinese there's the saying, " nan zuo, nu you " , or " man left, woman right " , but all my teachers have said this is not considered relevant to the pulse, the left pulse belonging to Yin, blood, etc, and the right pulse belonging to Yang, qi, etc. Regarding when you can begin to feel the " pregnancy pulse " , I've also heard it's difficult to be accurate regarding gender in the first trimester, although it's generally possible to feel the pregnancy in the pulse sooner than that. Guest guest
all i know is that one of my instructors accurately predicted that my child would be a girl ... i think he used a variety of different methods, and he mentioned that he had to see the father in order to know for sure. Guest guest
hi all, thats one of the things i love so much about chinese medicine, that there are many ways that lead to the same and accurate diagnosis, in this case gender prediction. so far i have been 100% right with my predicitions, but that may have just been luck.. i learned and understand the left pulse as yin and the right pulse as yang; deep or superficial pulse can be a sign, or kidney yin or -yang - pulse; i found that the liver pulse is connected to boys and the spleen pulse to girls. and i am sure there are many more ways to detect what its going to be.. rebekka Chinese Medicine , " shamanist1 " <shamanist1 wrote: > > all i know is that one of my instructors accurately predicted that my > child would be a girl ... i think he used a variety of different > methods, and he mentioned that he had to see the father in order to > know for sure. >

I did not know about the middle finger pulse...I checked for it on someone yesterday...and lo and behold, there it was. Do you know how to calculate the length of the pregnancy by where this middle finger pulse extends to? Like trimester being able to be ascertained according to where on the finger the pulse is. Also, I am not sure what you mean by " slippery and jumpy " --especially the " jumpy " part. I amy be able to find a difference in the slipperiness between the right and the left wrist, but perhaps you could elucidat " jumpy " for me. Thanks for the replies. If anyone else knows of any other pulse system I will add it to my knowlege to date and see if my accuracy stays high. I am recruiting pregnant women in an informal way so I can practice. R. Guest guest
Hi R.C., Middle finger pulse, btwn the MCP joint and the first IP joint is the first trimester, second trimester is btwn the 1st and 2nd IP joints, third is past the 2nd IP joint. Jumpy is " dong4 " in Chinese. Hits the fingers with a bit of strength. Hard to describe pulses over the internet... Greg Chinese Medicine , " rcooper1us " <rcooper1us wrote: > > " Greg A.
