Guest guest
Having helped a few friends heal themselves through my informal study of naturopathy (much of which I've learned from the good people in this group!), I've decided I'd really like to pursue a career in natural healing. I live in France at the moment, but really need lessons in English, so ideally would like courses I could take by correspondence. Though if that's not possible I would consider a move to a place that had a very good school. I suppose I don't necessarily need a Naturopathic Doctor degree, but would need enough training where I could set up some sort of natural healing practice. Any suggestions? Guest guest
Thanks to everyone with suggestions. I've been doing as much research as I can on the internet and Clayton seems to come up quite often. I also noticed Trinity College seems to have an interesting program, though they seem to be a Christian college (not that there's anything wrong with that, I just don't want any particular religion to be mixed up with my studies). Sandi, do you feel the quality of the teaching at Clayton is of a high standard? I guess my main concern is that I will be able to practice naturopathy after completing the full course. Apparently a number of states require that one attends one of the five colleges in North America that teach it, which seems absurd to me. Helping people heal themselves through natural methods, as long as one is well trained, should never be illegal. Seems like the AMA might be feeling a little threatened! Guest guest
Hi Veronica, Here is Trinity's naturopathy program: http://www.trinityschool.org/html-NH/NH-nd.php You might also check out the American Association of Drugless Practitioners: http://www.aadp.net/ and the American Naturopathic Medical Accreditation Board: http://www.aadp.net/ both of whom list colleges that are certified and accredited by them. This still does not provide you with a license to practice naturopathy in the states that require it, but it does offer some validation for your training and the programs offered. Guest guest
Thanks for the websites everyone. I am really new to all of this. I am currently enrolled in school for nursing but I haven't started the nursing program yet. I have taken the pre-requisites though. The only thing is that I don't want to use the chemicals and toxins that they use for any of the patients I will have to deal with. I am doing as much research as I can into this. How can I find out if licensing for naturopathic health is okay for Florida? Do I need to check with our government website or something? Guest guest
Hi, There is no licensing for Florida. I live here also and want to go to school for homeopathic medicine but it is not legal here. I checked for licensing here and you cannot get licensed in FL. I will eventually be moving to New Mexico where you can be a Homeopathic Doctor. I know a few ladies that are Naturopathic Doctors that live here so I am wondering were they NDs before moving here or how they are practicing? I will have to find out more about it and see! Guest guest
Are Herbal Remedies the same as Homeopathic Remedies? No. Homeopathic medicine is a field of alternative medicine all its own and is the leading alternative therapy in France. It uses tiny doses of herbs, minerals and poison in a theory called the law of the similar. Its premise is that if large doses of a certain substance can cause a problem, a minute dose can help the same problem. **************************** Re: Schools for naturopathy? Guest guest
Dear Laurel, Right on!!! re Bastyr et al. New Mexico is a great state to live in for those reasons. My clinic was a real concern there while it lasted, and I love that area. I wish you all the best in your endeavors. Thanks Doc, your advice was very helpful. I agree that Bastyr is basically a pre-med school. Their courses don't inspire me at all. In addition, they seem bent on preventing anyone other than their graduates from practicing naturopathy. Not very enlightened an approach in a culture far too lacking in natural healing.I'm glad to hear about Clayton and Trinity. Their curriculum seems right up my alley and they seem to have a decent reputation. I will check out Dr. Christopher's school as well. I've got his book, "School of Natural Healing," which is an excellent reference book.I used to live in Santa Fe, so could conceivably move back there to practice (even if there are an abundance of natural healers there). Is there an association of naturopaths not tied to these so-called "naturopathic medicine" schools that can lobby against restrictive licensing? Thanks again, Doc!Laurelherbal remedies , "Dr. Ian Shillington" <DocShillington wrote:>> Dear Laurel,> > Yes! They are currently being real nasty to the rest of the schools out there so that they can have a monopoly. Guest guest
Thus far I have narrowed down my school search to Clayton and Global College of Natural Medicine. Both are accredited by the AADP and the ANMAB. However, to be honest, even though Clayton seems to be most known and has the best reputation, GCNM has a slightly more interesting curriculum for their Holistic Health Practitioner program (and is a few thousand dollars less expensive as well). The one thing missing from Clayton's ND program that is offered by GCNM is a course in Alternative Diagnostic methods. It seems a useful tool when seeing clients to determine where their imbalances may be. I wrote to Clayton with this question some days ago and have not received a response. To sum up my question, does anyone on the list have any knowledge of GCNM and do you think the course work and materials are sufficiently in-depth? Guest guest
I loved the Iridology program that was part of Trinity's N.D. curriculum = totally facinating. However, I've found the best way to diagnose is to simply ask questions. Ask enough questions, and you'll come up with the major problem on the case. Almost too simple!
