Guest guest
Thank you Marge. Is there a book or source where I could find different shelf lives listed? Do people ever store them in the refrigerator? I'd like to see the nitrogen blanket....is it on your website? Peggy it really does depend on the oils...because they all have different shelf lives. the other thing is how they are stored....if you are buying larger bottles you might want to use a nitrogen blanket to form a barrier between the oil and the oxygen in the air. oxygenation is what is going to 'age' the oils. Do people ever store them in the refrigerator? I'd like to see the nitrogen blanket....is it on your website? Peggy Hi Peggy, I'm not Marge, (though I sure do want her job - LOL) but the nitrogen " blanket " is just nitrogen in a can that you spray into the bottle of oil to " top it off " leaving a layer, or " blanket " if you will, over the exposed layer of oil in the bottle. This occludes the surface of the oil (the heavier nitrogen displacing the room air in the bottle) creating a invisible buffer between the oil and air, preventing oxidization. One note: be extra-super careful while spraying into your bottles, it's really easy to get splashback, and eucalyptus in the face ain't fun. You HAVE to get the nozzle close to the surface of the oil and spray gently, then cap quickly. While nitrogen is heavy, it will try to correct the concentration gradient and escape the bottle quickly. Marge DOES have it on her website. I got my bottle before she started selling it (from a wine merchant,) in the future I'll get it from Marge as the price is comparable, (it's cheap) and I like supporting Nature's Gift. I keep citruses in the fridge, and chamomiles to protect the gorgeous blue color. I'll let others who know more about shelf-lives address that issue. Guest guest
Hi Peggy, If you are using oils fast in your soaps, then by all means, get the big sizes - but yes, get what you can reasonably use in a couple of years. In general essential oils kept in good storage conditions will last a long time. What are good storage conditions you may ask - not exposed to sunlight and heat, capped, with as little air/headspace in the bottle as possible - either by putting them into the smallest bottle they will fit in as you use them up, adding glass marbles to the bottles to keep the head space minimal, or adding a nitrogen blanket like those used for wines. Some oils like Rose Otto and Sandalwood, kept in those proper conditions, actually improve with age. Citrus oils on the other hand tend to oxidize rather quickly, so it is best to use them faster. If you want to get some pricier oils in bulk to save money, but are worried you won't be able to use them in the time frame of a couple of years, might I suggest doing a co-op, even on a small scale. That way, you and a few other folks can get those oils at a lower price, but not each have to be stuck sitting on an amount too large (and have all that money tied up in a large amount of one expensive item too). I hoe that helped some *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Peggy Lowell [plowell] Monday, January 19, 2004 3:59 PM Beginner question and hi Misty One question that I have is that when buying the oils...what size. I use them so fast in my soaps that I don't worry about this...Should I get what I can reasonably use in a couple of years or can I buy more and not worry about using it in a specified time.... or is it different with differnet oils. For example I want to buy some or the pricier oils for just my own use...example: Jasmine....should I buy the smallest or get more for my money and go with a larger one.
