Hi Joel

If you're looking for English-language texts then Bensky's " Materia

Medica " 3rd Edition and " Formulas & Strategies " (Eastland Press) have

been the standard for decades.

But in my view they are sometimes very difficult to understand

(obscure and self-contradictory). I feel this is because they were

mostly 'pieced together' by Bensky and friends from a small number of

Chinese texts - and inevitably that method of writing will produce

synchretistic anomalies.

Nonetheless, I think they are the only English-language texts that

deal with materia medica and formulae in this depth - and they are my

first point of reference.

I also like Jiao Shu-de's " Medicinals " and " Formulas " (recently

brought out by Paradigm Publications) for an occasionaly slightly

different angle and sometimes better understanding.

And Z'ev has sung the praises of " Clinical Handbook of Internal

Medicine " (vols 1 and 2) by Will Maclean and Jane Lyttleton

(University of Western Syndney). It's sitting on my bookshelp, though

I haven't had the time to use it yet. But it looks good - very clear

writing and some useful pathomechanistic explanations - very

readable, so could be read from cover. Doesn't give much background

regarding the herbs and formulae's construction, but really useful

clinical guide for the learning practioner working in clinic.

Let me know if you're looking for Chinese-language - the answer to

that is more long-winded.

Oh, I forgot to mention " Fluid Physiology and Pathology in

Traditional " by Steven Clavey (Churchill

Livingston). A book primarily dealing with herbal interventions -

amazingly useful and cogent explanations of how to use herbal

medicines to treat body fluid pathologies - with masses of

pathomechanistic information. I'm currently reading it - and loving

it.
