It should be interesting when Andy Ellis finally publishes his new book on

the use of powders - which should be in a couple of months....

There are three reasons to have surgery for a uterine fibroid.

1. the mass is impinging on organ or structural function

2. there is bleeding that you have tried to stop but can't

3. there has been evidence of malignancy

For an ovarian cyst

1. it is a dermoid cyst

2. there is evidence or likelihood of malignancy

3. it is twisted

If your patient has none of these signs then I would advice her to

wait re: surgery.

I very much disagree with Gabrielle about using blood movers before

the menses. If blood stasis is significant by which I mean painful

menses or menses with clots, you have to use herbs to move the blood

in order to stop bleeding. Any other approach with further stagnate

the blood. Use herbs such as:

Pu Huang

Pu Huang Tan

Qian Cao Gen

large doses of Yi Mu Cao

etc.

When blood stasis is a major cause of heavy bleeding - which it so

often is - you must move blood premenstrually and through the first

part of the menses. This is the protocol taught to me by my gyn

teacher in China and the protocol used in the many cases I have

treated and translated. If there is blood stasis, this protocol will

not cause excessive bleeding at all.

I have also had many patient's fibroids shrink and go away. This is

especially true if there is heavy bleeding. I don't treat the

fibroid. I treat the bleeding based on the cause of the bleeding.

The causes of bleeding are

1. Blood stasis

2. Qi deficiency (Spleen or Kidney)

3. Heat (empty or full)

In many cases when the menstruation is balanced and regulated, the

fibroid is gone.

This is not true of pedunculated fibroids.

Good comments Sharon. I have uploaded a file on uterine fibroids to

the files section (called 1 Fibroids) that covers the pathomechanisms

and treatment of uterine fibroids from a Chinese medical perspective,

along with the three major traditional diseases that fibroids

generally present with in Chinese medicine. These diseases are:

concretions and conglomerations (zheng jia), profuse menstruation, and

flooding and spotting. The material of this file is derived from

compilation of Chinese language texts, primarily mainstream Chinese

medical gynecology texts and integrated medical texts.
