The Guatemala Human Rights Commission USA sends this

very frightening news

about the assassination of a human rights leader in

the Peten, active in

land rights, health and education issues, as well as

denunciations of the

Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Alvaro

Juárez is a very respected figure there who encouraged

our work. if you are able please follow

the instructions in the communiqué for sending

letters of concern to

authorities.

My appologies for posting this since I know it is off

topic, but this is very personal.

I work in the Peten with San Benito as my base and am

heading back soon.

URGENT ACTION July 12, 2005

HUMAN RIGHTS LEADER ASSASSINATED

Alvaro Juárez, 64 years old, was assassinated on the

night of July 8.

According to the Unity of Protection for Human Rights

Defenders, he was

eating dinner with his wife at his house in San

Benito Petén when heavily

armed men arrived at the door. His wife went back

into the kitchen. Then

she heard shots. When she returned to the room where

her husband had

been,

she found him dead.

Mr. Juárez played a leadership role in the Alliance

for Life and Peace and

was also a member of the Association of the Displaced

of the Petén. He

was

working on issues of development related to health,

education, land,

housing, and humanitarian assistance. He was also

working against impunity

in the Petén and often denounced injustice,

corruption, and abuses of

authority committed by the National Civil Police.

The Association of Displaced of the Petén is a member

of the Alliance for

Life and Peace, a network of organizations that has

been carrying out

campaigns against the Central American Free Trade

Agreement (CAFTA) and

against the construction of hydroelectric dams in the

Petén.

The motive for the killing is unknown, but Guatemalan

human rights

analysts

note with concern that his murder coincides with the

intimidation of two

other human rights defenders who have been active in

the struggle against

CAFTA. Those two human rights defenders have

received written death

threats. The characteristic that unites these three

cases is that the

attacks are being directed against leaders who have

been important in the

movement but have not been public.

An attempt had previously been made on Mr. Juarez'

life, also while he was

in his home. He had reported the attempt to the

authorities, but it was

never investigated, and it was not reported to other

organizations within

civil society. Several days before his murder,

according to reports, he

had

received threats and had reported them to the Public

Prosecutor's Office

and

to the Human Rights Procurator's Office in Guatemala

City.

The Association of the Displaced of the Petén has

purposely not done any

media work related to the murder, in order to avoid

pressure on the

survivors. Please respond to the action below, while

respecting their

wishes not to publicize the case with the media.

REQUESTED ACTION

1) Express serious concern about the murder of Alvaro

Juárez.

2) Urge the authorities to investigate the murder

thoroughly and prosecute

those responsible.

3) Express serious concern for the safety of Alvaro

Juárez' family members

and all members of the Association of the Displaced

of the Petén and the

Alliance for Life and Peace. Demand that the

Guatemalan government take

whatever protective measures they request.

4) Remind the Guatemalan government that under the

Peace Accords, it has

the

specific responsibility to protect human rights

workers. In signing the

Peace Accords the government agreed to the following:

" The Government of

the

Republic of Guatemala shall take special measures to

protect those persons

or entities working in the field of human rights.

Furthermore it shall

investigate, in a timely and exhuastive manner, any

complaint it may

receive

relating to acts or threats that may be directed at

them. The Government

of

the Republic of Guatemala reiterates the commitment

to safeguard and

protect

effectively the work of individuals and entities

engaged in upholding

human

rights. "

This has nothing to do with TCM and is purely political. This falls outside

the focus of this group.

Please DO NOT post such messages to this group.

IMO -Quite to the contrary of your OPINION - this post about what

often happens to those of us who oppose CAFTA is quite relevent to

our discussion of the CODEX - as Matt Bauer posted to this list;

>The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) treaty ratification

passed the U.S. Senate on June 30. It is expected to be voted on in the

House on July 11, when members return from their holiday break. With

the Codex Guidelines for Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements now

officially available to be enforced by the WTO, health freedom advocacy

groups point out that some terms in CAFTA would strengthen the

movement to force the U.S. to weaken DSHEA (which currently provides

U.S. residents free access to dietary supplements.)<

Personaly I find this quite on topic since it involves our ability to

practice openly.

Here in the Western Hemisphere CAFTA is part and parcel of the Drug

Companies plan to get rid of TCM, supplements, herbs etc. The CODEX is

included in the CAFTA treaty.

I find it of interest that you include a quote from Albert Einstein in

which he points out the concept of interconectedness at the end of

your post based IMHO on the concept of things not being connected.

Interconectedness or Dialectic is often expressed as Yin Yang which

is IMO the basis of our medicine.

Hi Mike!

In certain other lists I to they ask that you include

something pre-agreed upon in the subject line like [POL], for example,

if the post contains political content. Then people who do not wish to

read such things can set a filter in their email client to delete any

message where the subject contains [POL].

The subject line thing also lets you move the [POL] stuff to its own

folder and then read it if you are bored, have the time or alternatively

you could never get around to it if that is how it turns out, very nice

to have the choice. It works pretty well, every now and then someone

forgets to put in the [POL] but not that often, surprisingly.

Other lists have set up parallel services to handle political rants. I

don't think this is quite as good, personally. Too much trouble to

to another list just to read politics.

Regards,

Pete
