If it is western influence then it is a good

example of how Chinese medicine can evolve (call it what you like).

>>>>>>>>>>>>>

That is all i am saying. CM has evolved to mean various ways of interpreting our

environment and patient interactions. These have undoubtedly been influenced

from ideas seeping in from many parts of the world. I see no reason we should

stop this process at this point. The notion that practitioner today must somehow

know the entire written history in order to do that, were in the past they

probably had so much less excess to such materials, is to me just naive and

romantic.

You say So what?>>>exactly that is what I say, so what? we need to keep CM alive

and life means change.

The difference, Alon, is that throughout its history CM has been able

to absorb new influences and adapt them to the overall structure of the

medicine until the modern era. The difference now is that the actual

foundations of Chinese medicine are being diluted, weakened and mixed

with biomedicine in the most influential schools and hospitals in

China. Just read reports from such authorities as Paul Unschuld,

Nathan Sivin, Judith Farquhar and other medical anthropologists. There

are real questions as to whether true Chinese medicine can survive, or

for that matter, any other traditional medical system outside of

Western medicine. Continued dilution to the structure of traditional

medicines may lead to their disappearance.

I have no problem with studying any medical system or technique that

improves people's health. I do have a problem with eclecticism when

practitioners do not have a strong grounding in Chinese medicine to

begin with. And I have to say, not too many of us are steeped in

Chinese medicine enough to do so.
