Hi Emmanuel

I can't find the herb Jiao Gu Lan in my Bensky Materia Medica. Is

that the same as Jiao Mu (the seeds of Chuan Jiao Pericarpium

Zanthoxyli Bungeani)? Thanks for sharing what looks like a great

formula for many patients in need!! Of course, we must always

differentiate carefully when patients come to us with a " medical

diagnosis " such as elevated cholesterol but this looks like a good

place to start with many.

Regards, Shanna

Hospital #1 in Shanghai has in recent years used a formula

utilizing the following herbs: Shan Zha, Jue Ming Zi, He Shou Wu,

Tian Qi, Hu

Zhang, Jiao Gu Lan, and Lai Fu Zi. This lowers cholesterol as well

or better

than statins with no observable side effects.

Hi Shanna,

Jiao Gu Lan is Gynnostemma phentaphyllum Herba. The entire aerial parts are

used by local people in Shaanxi Province, but most precisely it's the stem of

the vine. You can find it coiled or cut into conveniently sized pieces of two

to four inches. The more bitter the taste, the more effective the results in

the formula. It is viewed by Taoists as a Kidney jing tonic along with the Gou

Qi Zi of the neighboring autonomous region, Ningha Huizu Zizhiqu. At least the

local priests of Shaanxi as well as Liu Ming of Oakland, CA and Nam Singh of San

Francisco discuss this. In school we're taught that Kidney jing can not be

tonified. Connect with me offlist to get a price for the crude herb.

Regarding use of the vine stem of Jiao Gu Lan, the locals in Shaanxi as well as

the Chinese here in America make tea of Jaio Gu Lan alone. I can buy it as an

instant tea in my 99 Ranch grocery store near my home in Richmond, CA.

Regarding use in formulas, Dr. Kang utilized it in Shanghai Hospital #1 as well

as here in his practice in San Francisco. We have a website (connect with me

off list) that you can look at and see how Dr. Kang utilizes the herb in the

formulas. He has it in many of the formulas listed at that site. Dr. Kang

indicates that Jiao Gu Lan can strengthen the Liver function and also clear

triglycerides from a fatty liver. This greatly improves issues around hepatitis

and high cholesterol. He also utilizes Jiao Gu Lan in his longevity/tonic

formula. That's listed on the website as well. I think of it as both a liver

and a kidney tonic. I sense that it acts adaptogenically like Eleutherococcus

root.

As I recall, Jiao Gu Lan was listed in the new Ten Lectures book at Redwing.

Ten Lectures on the Use of Medicinals from Personal Exp JSD

by Shu-De Jiao, Craig Mitchell (tr) / Chinese Med Herbs & Formulas

Go to: http://www.redwingbooks.com/products/books/TenLecUseChiMed.cfm

in order to purchase this book. It's the new material medica that also lists the

real Shui Ban Xia as Typhonium flagelliforme Rhizome in p. 359. I'm using this

book every day now. It pretty much replaces Bensky though it's different enough

that I tend to use both.

I hope this helps a bit. Please note from previous posts that Merck became

interested in looking for molecules to lower cholesterol when it became common

knowledge in some circles that clinical practitioners in Shanghai hospitals and

other major facilities were routinely lowering cholesterol quite effectively

with Chinese herbal formulas. The mismatch between using pharmacologically

active individual molecules and whole extracts of herbal formulas is really

quite profound. It's the focus of my own work as a biochemist/genetic engineer

working in Chinese medicine at different companies since 1991. I'll leave off

here as this topic itself is novel length.

Respectfully,

Emmanuel Segmen
