What is the opinion in here on soy milk? Is it a god idea to switch

kids from regular milk to soy milk??

MOST soy is GMO.... so switching to rice or almond milk would be much better. Almond seems to be leading the pack - we've had discussions on this before.. Do a message search on soy milk ... I think there may even be an article on it in the files.

This is my own opinion. I avoid soy products because so many soy

strains have been genetically altered - same for corn in my personal

usage. Twenty years ago I went vegetarian and started using tofu and

soy and had horrible reactions. People with compromised immune

systems, some children and the elderly, are more susceptible to soy

allergies. My body will receive rice products..rice milk, rice

cheese etcetera. And I also can take cold fresh goat milk on

occasion. I have a nutritional colleague that will not allow any of

her clients soy products for the same reason; genetic rearrangement.

You will find others on here that don't agree with my choice. - dolly

Hi :)

I will say that I drink soy milk on a regular basis. I also use

tofu, but not on such a regular basis. I will also say this, however:

I ONLY get my soy milk at a health food store. It's the Whole Foods

Market's ORGANIC 365 brand, which says it's 3rd party certified

organic and is NON-GMO. Drinking soy seems fine to me (though I've

only done limited research) but it is IMPERATIVE that it is organic.

A good link I found (today, actually), is www.soyinfo.com. They

present a pretty comprehensive vat of info and they are not funded by

nor associated with soy manufacturers and they're nonprofit and all

that.

I HAVE heard that soy BABY formulas are NO BUENO, and I would tend

to agree with that. Breastfeeding is always best--the longer the

better. (I've even heard up to 2 yrs of age, but if anyone else has a

different opinion, plz correct me.)

I've also heard that soy does have certain hormones in it that may

make it unfit for childrens' consumption, as it's been linked to

premature onset of puberty. Someone said something like up to 35% of

kids today are exhibiting signs of puberty like genital growth and

pubic hair when they're 7-8 yrs old. That's just wrong. :) So I might

consume it as an adult, but I might not let my kids do so until I've

done further research, (and finding unbiased sources is tough.)

Hope that helps!

Regarding soy... read Doc's article A Bedtime Story (or) How I discovered a Frankenfood Monster , Just because it says it is non-GMO doesn't necessarily mean it is...

Almond or rice milk is a better choice.

I am sorry if I sound ignorant, but what is GMO?

Also, you say that soy is not good for kids for the hormones, but

wouln't you think cow's milk is even worst? Which one of the two

evels would be better?? I mean kids do need milk, so what would be

the best thing for them? I buy the West Soy brand, it is organic,

but I am not sure about the GMO.

Thank you so much for all the information, I just don't now at this

point what is the best thing for them. I breastfed them until past

age 1, so at least I am happy I was able to do that.

Good for you on breastfeeding so long! Some moms wanna skip feeding

altogether and go straight for the formula. I applaud you :)

GMO is Genetically Modified Organism or something like that. It means

it's been altered genetically.

And yeah, cow's milk (especially if it's from a regular grocery

store) is REALLY bad. I do drink some cow's milk, but it's not very

much. And again, it's supposed to be organic--as in, no abnormal

hormones used. It's Organic Valley, and they're pretty good. I'd let

my kids drink (some) of that. At least that's my thought at this

point.

I'd try, if you have access to it, something like almond milk or rice

milk (haven't tried it but want to really bad). Some mention a bit of

goat's milk, which, (as long as it's organic) is said to cause far

fewer problems than cow's milk. I've read that about 20% of the

world's population CAN tolerate cow's milk without any discomfort or

anything.

And don't worry about sounding ignorant! :) Hell, you should see some

of my questions, esp since I'm a newbie too :) We noobs gotta start

somewhere, right? ;) lol

OK I'm wayyy too loopy...NO, I haven't taken any conventional cold

remedies...plz forgive me :)

Don't look in the refrigerated section... it will be on a shelf... Wild Oats and True Foods carry it. Ask them...(if you have these stores)

Hey Jen,

Your gonna through all this into your blender so you can either use Vanilla extract, do make sure you don't use vanillin which is synthetic, or use a vanilla bean. I just put a whole bean in and blend away with the almonds and water. Add a little maple syrple or honey or molasses if you find you wish it sweeter.

Very good but does not keep long even under refrigeration. Got to use it up quickly.

We steer away from soy in our family for two reasons. One is the GMO aspect, and the other is the estrogen-like compounds. We are not comfortable with the lack of knowledge of the long term effects of these.

If you want to take them off of what is called "milk" that they sell in stores, try almond milk. It is delicious!!

I personally don't believe that, once a child is weaned, they still need milk. Why is it that humans are the only "animal" that continues to drink milk after weaning? Can we say "revenue generator"?. True, there are things in milk that every body needs, like calcium. But there is so much in milk that is so incredibly bad for a body, the negative outweighs the positive. And all that is in milk that we need can be gotten from other, healthier sources, that it makes milk, well, obsolete, unnecessary, and even dangerous.

Yet the calcium in milk is almost impossible for the human body to use with all the other crap it is bound up with. This is why man gets all his vitamins and minerals from the plant kingdom. It is not only organic but made specifically for human use. Baby cows can utilize the calcium in cow milk cause it was meant for them. Humans cannot contrary to what the dairy council has to say.

I hope this does not sound ignorant, I guess I am becoming a little

paranoid now, but I read the article A Bedtime Story (or) How I

discovered a Frankenfood Monster by Doc Shillington and my question

is now. Everyone keeps reccomending almond milk, but how do we know

that Almond milk is not GE/GMO as well, just like they have been

able to do it with the soy beans, they could do it with almonds and

then, how do we even know that organic is really organic. They

could be telling us the meat or everything else for that matter is

organic, but how do we know for sure??

I have a question on soy. Isn't it full of hormones?? I remember reading somewhere that soy wasn't good for you due to the levels of estrogen, which can lead to tumors (breast seem to lead the argument on that one) and basically very womanly characteristics in men and children? I read that years ago, but prefer soy over cow's milk...can't do goat..maybe the name? But, am planning to give coconut and almond a go in the very near future...thanks in advance...Love..

I did hear that soy does have plenty of estrogen. I've also heard

that that actually SOLVES some problems for females. Now, for women,

that's just fine. Men on the other hand... ;) Actually, I'm not sure.

That's just my gut reaction. I still think it beats cow's milk--but I

could be wrong. I found a great website that's pretty comprehensive,

though. It's also nice because there's a lot of info but it's

relatively unbiased, as they're a non-profit operation that doesn't

take any funding from nor associate with any entity with a vested

interest. You can find it at: www.soyinfo.com

Hope that helps :)

--Jen

PS: Per usual, anyone feel free to correct me, as these are just my

opinions thus far and the research to support my opinions so far is

not all that extensive...yet. :)

PS: Per usual, anyone feel free to correct me, as these are just my opinions thus far and the research to support my opinions so far is not all that extensive...yet. :)LOL...Well Jen, seems we are in the same boat on this subject anyway. Sitll compiling info...and usually got most from http://www.notmilk.com for vegan recipes, and they push soy big time..but I must say I agree...that it beats cow milk, but have you read that too much estrogen casues tumors? Or is that more medico cartel jibberish?? Jeez...maybe I'll have a handle on it all by the time I am a gramma...hopefully a good 15 or more years...LOL...thanks for the link!! Love...

Hey Blaze :)

Anytime. :) I've been to notmilk.com too and it's a pretty cool

site :)

I have read that too much estrogen causes tumors but it's tough to

say whether or not that's simple medico garble lol. More gun

reaction: I have read from trusted books that hormones in general are

extremely powerful--in other words, a little variation in levels can

often lead to a host of big probs, depending on the hormone, etc.

They're not really somethin' to play with if ya know what I mean. But

at least for now, I haven't found sufficient evidence of drawbacks

(from trusted sources) of organic soy milk to stop my mild-to-

moderate consumption of it. I've heard that an abundance of certain

hormones causes tumors and I've also heard that supplementation with

other hormones can help protect against tumors. That's all I know,

though, and then there's that whole y'all-feel-free-to-correct-me

thing. ;)

There's the old adage, too: everything in moderation, or so momma

says.

Notmilk's got some pretty decent vegan recipes, too, don't they? :)

I'm in that " experimental " stage...trying to get off animal foods

(too dirty to the system) but having been raised in this culture

where a meat-free diet is a foreign concept to the mainstream, there

are SO many good vegetarian foods that I don't even yet know about.

Like I'm trying to learn about tofu and how to prepare it and stuff.

I figure I'll take it in stages and make gradual changes. I think my

biggest vegetarian accomplishment is that I weaned myself slowly off

cow's milk (which was a miracle, considering I used to often drink a

full gallon of milk a day!) and onto soy milk. I've been on it for

about 6 mos now and while that's kind of a short time, I haven't

noticed any probs or changes.

OK, I've blabbered long enuf now lol :))

(Can I use that loopy brain disclaimer one more day??)

Avec humour,
