Guest guest
Dear Members I don't know whether this posting is appropriate for this wonderful group or not. I am writing a book that discusses a particular number sequence in mathematics. This number type are called triangular numbers. Triangular numbers are defined as numbers of the form: 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 45, 66, ..... I want this group to to pick a title for this book out of two choices. First Choice: Exploring Mathematics Through Triangular Numbers Second Choice: A Course in Triangular Numbers (borrowing from A Course in Miracles). If you walk into a bookstore which of those titles will appeal to you. Please I need your judgement. I am not writing the book for myself. The book is for interested parties and the reading public. In case you are wondering about the book's audience include high school seniors in a special math program, high school math teachers, college math majors, math professors, and researchers, etc. In fact, anyone with a penchant for mathematics will find the book very exciting and relevant. You don't have to be a mathematician to pick the title of your choice. Thank you all. Sincerely, Paul Emekwulu
Guest guest
I'm voting for " A Course In Triangular Numbers " . I just won't pick up a book at the bookstore with the word " mathmatics " in it, makes me break out in hives... , Paul Emekwulu <pemekwulu wrote: > > > Dear Members > > I don't know ... Guest guest
First of all if you can tell us Why do we need to know about this numbers, is there spiritual or scientific or any other meaning behind them, if you can tell me about it I can be better help for choosing the right name for you. Assuming the non-academic person has at least heard of triangular numbers (I haven't and have no idea what the sequence above indicates) the second choice might be more likely to get them to at least pick up the book and look at the jacket. Guest guest
The number sequence indicated in the original post is derived by adding sequential numbers to the previous answer (for example 1 +2, 3+3, 6+4.....). That's pretty much the end of my advanced mathematical knowledge. My guess is that the average non-mathematical person is not going to be in the math section of the bookstore and wouldn't pick up a book with either title unless they were already looking for it. Therefore the primary focus should probably be on what academians will select. My guess is that those educators in a high school setting will chose the first title if your book is expensive and will need the approval of the school board, since this choice suggests a broader view of mathematics. If the book is reasonably inexpensive and is geared toward student purchase, or as supplemental material for advanced mathematics classes, I would think that choice two would be more appealing. The second title is more to the point and suggests that it is a supplement geared toward a greater understanding of triangular numbers and their uses, rather than a greater understanding of the broad topic of mathematics through the exploration of triangular numbers. The latter is much more daunting. > First Choice: Exploring Mathematics Through > Triangular Numbers I think this title would be most appropriate and more likely to be picked by someone in academia, but might be more " scary " for the average person walking into a bookstore. > > Second Choice: A Course in Triangular Numbers > (borrowing from A Course in Miracles). Guest guest
This is very intereting, as the Fibanacci number sequence is found throughout nature, so why wouldn't trianglular numbers be interesting for healing or other fascinating aspects of nature. Our universe is built upon the foundation, symmetry and order of mathematics. How about " Triangular Numbers...Explore the Possibilities " . Guest guest
My pick is your first choice. Exploring sounds much more exciting than a course. All the best with the book! Guest guest
Sorry-I am 51------i am sorry to report that myself and half the people i have spoken to have never heard of triangular numbers-I am in Australia-i presume ths is to do with healing------perhaps you could call your book ---------- " a Course in Healing with Triangular numbers----- " so you get the point across to the people interested in BOTH subjects! Ahhh...imagining that irresistible " new car " smell? Check outnew cars at Autos.
