Researcher Andrew Wakefield, MD, under attack—again

Dr. Andrew Wakefield has just released a public statement regarding new

politically motivated charges against him. Dr. Wakefield has shown exemplary

integrity and strength during the past several years amid political opposition

to his findings on autism and bowel disease. His research has cost him his job,

and continues to evoke personal attacks. ACN stands with Dr. Wakefield during

the new round of political pressure described in his statement. (This statement

was received February 22, 2004 through the Autism Autoimmunity Project.)

Bipolar disorder is starting at younger ages in the US than ever before. New

published research suggests stimulants and antidepressants may be the cause.

Research compares the prevalence of bipolar disorder in the US to that in the

Netherlands. The authors found that among adults and adolescents, bipolar

disorder has a similar prevalence in both locations. But for younger children,

the condition is frequently diagnosed in the US yet this seldom occurs in the

Netherlands. They hypothesize that this earlier onset in the US may be due to

the greater use of antidepressants and stimulants for depression or attention

deficit disorder with hyperactivity by US children. Reichart et al., suggest

that for children who are genetically at risk to develop bipolar disorder, the

drugs can trigger a switch to a manic state.
