Pacific Standard TimeSubj: FROM DEBRA: Banned Baby Mattresses Removed from Stores, new Q+A ... Greetings! Today an amazing thing is happening. Across the country, stores must remove and destroy baby mattresses containing toxic phthalates. This court order was issued only five days ago. Yet, though mattresses with these toxic chemicals can no longer be sold, there are millions of toxic mattresses containing now-banned chemicals on which babies are still sleeping, and there is no recall. So if you know someone who has a baby still sleeping on a conventional mattress, please let them know it's so toxic it has now been banned. You can read more about this victory on my blog at Q & A: TOXIC ALERT! Crib Mattresses Contain Toxic Chemicals Banned by U.S. Government. Valentine's Day is coming up this weekend, but I'm not going to suggest organic chocolates and wines. Instead, just a reminder that Valentine's Day is about LOVE, which is abundant and free. The best gifts come from the heart. Give yourself. Nami Non-Stick Glass Ovenware I know, I know. The words "non-stick" should send me running for the hills, but I'm wondering if you've heard about these Nami Non-Stick Glass dishes. They claim to be "Naturally Non-Stick" and that the coating is "healthy and chemical free", but I can't find anything that gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling about them. Read the answer... Kevlar and EMF's Can a Kevlar shield protect from EMF's? I have a couple of film bags that I use when travling through the airport. I was thinking of using it at work where there is a wi-fi hotspot transmeter 2 feet from my legs. I was thinking of placing the kevlar film bag right over the hotspot. In the mean time I am saving up for a trifield meter. Read the answer... PVC Plastic I recently purchased an H2O Steam Mop. I noticed that the plastic that holds the water is made of a #6 plastic with PVC stamped on it. I'm aware that #6 PVC plastic is not same to eat off of, but should I be concerned about anything else? Does it offgass? Thanks so much for your advice! Read the answer... Fiberglass swimming pools I was reading about the latest trend in swimming pools and learned about fiber glass in ground pools. NAOMI mattress standards Hi there, I was wondering if you know who created the NAOMI mattress standards? I think their standards look wonderful but their is only one company who is apparently certified by them so I kind of smell a rat. Also do you know anything about pure rest mattresses, do you feel they would pass your standards for organic? Thanks, Kristen Read the answer... EL Foust Air Filters for Chemical Odors? Hello- I recently tried an Austin Air filter (Healthmate MCS) in a problematic room (landlord had used glue-down bamboo and it was unbearable), but it was not very helpful. I see that Foust makes filters with supposedly powerful chemical scrubbers. Has anyone here used these? Many thanks. Read the answer... Do it Yourself Platform Bed Frame We recently purchased a wool mattress and needed a bed frame for it. My husband was able to build a simple platform bed frame using materials we purchased at Lowes for about $50.00. This not only saved us money, but I didn't have to deal with worrying about toxic finishes or outgassing. You can find easy to follow instructions at www.instructables.com/id/Cheap-easy-low- waste-platform-bed/ Read the answer... What type of wood floor should I use? Hi Debra: Your website is my absolute favorite! Bless you for all the good work you do! Had yet another question for you and your great blogging community. I am thinking of ripping out my carpet and installing wood floor for my very active child who has multiple allergies and sensitivities. Here's my dilemma: -- I had bamboo floors in the past which I loved, but they dinged easily and I had indentations all over my floor soon after they were installed. -- But the bamboo floors were not too hard on our feet, which is a good thing because I have a super active child who loves to run in circles and does occasionally trip and fall. I'm nervous about installing a wood floor that might be too hard and potentially dangerous for my child. Yet, I'd hate to have a floor that is too soft and has tons of dents (yes, my child throws things too). Any advice you can give us would be SO appreciated! Read the answer... Traveler's cups sold at Starbucks I received a thermos type drinking cup purchased at Starbucks with a ceramic insert. Is this healthy? How does it compare to the stainless steel ones? The pocket is now filled with white mold and the bag is not washable. It think it ballistic nylon with a waterproof plastic exterior. I know... I called the manufacturer to see how to clean it, but they said it was ruined and kindly offered me a substantial discount on a new one. This is a $150 bag, however, so I'd really like to figure out how to salvage it. It has now been sitting in the garage like this for almost two years, but obviously has been dry for some time so the mold hasn't grown. Baby number two is on the way. Is there any way to clean this up so that it's safe to use?
