I've passed on info on lead in vitamins before, but it's always a good review, especially for newer folks.

Your Tip:Lead in our Vitamins? In August, 2008 the FDA published "Survey Data on Lead in Women's and Children's Vitamins". The FDA tested 324 multivitamin-mineral products, from four categories---vitamins for small children, older children, prenatal/postnatal vitamins, and women's formulas. The average amount of lead exposure was 0.576 micrograms/day. Five samples would have provided exposures that exceeded 4 micrograms/day, the highest being 8.97 micrograms/day.The FDA conclusion was that the lead levels in all of these products were acceptable. However THERE IS NO KNOWN SAFE LEVEL OF LEAD. There is no known use for lead in the human body and it is considered to be a toxin at extremely low levels. This is true for all of us, but so much more important for infants, children, and pregnant women. What if a child is taking a multiple vitamin plus a mineral supplement? Many of us might be taking 10 or 15 or more supplements daily. Would our levels still be safe? Lead readily passes the placental barrier, and has been measured in fetal brain as early as 13 weeks gestation. Lead has been found in children with autism, attention deficit disorder, lower school performance, increased drop-out rates in school, and learning problems. An increase in blood levels from .48 ppm to .97 ppm lowered a child's IQ by 3 points. Later in life high lead levels can translate into problems with thinking and behavior, and in extreme cases can correlate with criminal problems. Below is a partial list of supplements from the FDA study. I urge you to look at the entire list to see if you or your children are taking a supplement on the list. Remember that the FDA says that they are all safe. Remember that there is NO safe level of lead. Choose your supplement companies carefully. Before you select a supplement contact the manufacturer and ask questions about how they test raw materials and final products for bacteria, toxic metals, etc. Here are the 10 with the highest amount of lead in each of the 4 categories.
