Your Tip:Fish Algae and DHAWe hear lots these days about the health benefits of certain fats, known as Omega-3 fatty acids. Our bodies cannot make these. They are considered essential because humans cannot make them. We must get them from our foods. That's why so many of us are eating fatty fish at least twice a week. Omega 3 fatty acids reduce inflammation. Inflammation is at the root of virtually every health issue. In The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods Michael Murray, ND, lists 50 health conditions which are linked to insufficient intake of Omega-3 fats. These include: acne, allergies, Alzheimer's, arthritis, asthma, attention deficit disorder, cancer, cartilage destruction, depression, diabetes, eczema, hypertension, inflammatory conditions, menopausal symptoms, post vital fatigue, pregnancy complications, Reye's syndrome, Sjogren-Larsson syndrome, stroke, and vision development impairment. One of the Omega-3 EFAs is called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It is essential for brain function, nervous system function, vision, and the function of every cell in your body. In fact 80% of your retina is made up of DHA; 60% of our brain is made up of fat...primarily DHA. DHA is found in salmon, tuna, swordfish, mackerel, tilefish, halibut, and sea vegetables (seaweed!) Concerns about the mercury content of those fish have led researchers to explore algae as a source of DHA. Fish don't make DHA; they get it from eating algae.Because algae is the source of DHA, companies have been making Omega-3 DHA and EPA supplements from algae. A recent study compared the nutritional availability of DHA from algae-oil capsules to that from cooked salmon. In this 2-week study 32 healthy men and women, ages 20 to 65 years, were randomized into 2 groups, consuming 600 mg of DHA from salmon or from algae oil capsules. They found that DHA levels rose significantly in both groups equally. Most people take fish oils, yet algae DHA is a great way for vegetarians, vegans, and people with elevated mercury levels to get their essential DHA.References:1.
