From KTVU (San Francisco) and AP---independent verification that Chiron shipped out doses of flu vaccine to middlemenit appears that the Chiron CEO is talking about the million doses of flu vaccine sent out in July, long before the company did its final inspection for safety and before health regulators shut down the vaccine. Lets see. A company makes a medical product in the millions of doses. It ASSUMES it is safe, so it sends out the door a huge number of vials. THEN it does the final safety check. Then BOOM. Of course, health officials and corporate honchos say this early shipping is standard practice throughout the vaccine industry and its not a problem. Really. Suppose I manufacture bullets. I do a run of fifty million, and I sell ten million. Then I do the final safety check and discover that these bullets explode inside the gun before they exit the barrel. Then I say, dont worry, be happy, Ive just notified all the middlemen I sold the ten million bullets to. Ive told them to hold their supplies and not re-sell them. Its all good. No one is dishonest. I ALWAYS ship out new bullets before I do the final safety tests and my middlemen down the line ALWAYS wait until I do the final safety checks before they re-sell them and, if the bullets turn out to be defective, the middlemen NEVER re-sell them. Nation's Flu Vaccine Supply Takes Big Hit POSTED: 4:00 pm PDT August 26, 2004 SAN FRANCISCO -- The nation's supply of vaccine for the impending flu season took a big hit Thursday when Chiron Corp. announced it found tainted doses in its factory. The company said it will hold up shipment of about 50 million shots -- about half the supply U.S. health officials had hoped to have on hand this year -- while it investigates what went wrong and determines whether the vaccine is safe to use. U.S. health officials said some people may not get flu shots when they want this year, but that they were hopeful Chiron's production problems are only temporary. Demand typically peaks in October and November. "Based on what we know, we don't expect a major delay and we believe we can effectively vaccinate the population at risk," CDC chief Dr. Julie Gerberding said. "We are in daily contract with Chiron and we will be tracking this along with the Food and Drug Adminsitration." Flu kills 36,000 people and hospitalizes another 114,000 in an average year, primarily the elderly, according to the CDC. Last year's flu season got off to an unusually early and harsh start, which raised fears and caused demand for vaccines to outstrip supply for the first time. Health officials expect a record number of people to request vaccinations this year owing to the publicity generated by last year's season and the subsequent shortage. The CDC ordered 100 million doses to be made for this season, about 17 million does more than last year. Chiron supplies about half the nation's flu vaccine. Aventis Pasteur supplies most of the rest. Chiron officials Thursday said the company now hopes to ship between 46 million and 48 million doses by early October, about a month later than usual. "There's no product that is going to go into the arms of the American public that will not have been deemed to have met the highest standards of safety," chief executive Howard Pien said. Pien said about 1 million doses have already been shipped to middlemen, but no vaccines have yet reached the public. Emeryville-based Chiron would not give details on the nature of the contamination, which Pien said was found in a small number of batches at the company's factory in Liverpool, England. Last year, the company made 38 million shots, accounting for about $230 million in revenue. Because of the production problems, Chiron also warned that its earnings will meet the "low end" of a forecast range . The company made the announcement after the stock markets closed. Now, if these gougers are willing to charge $1000 a vial, do you think they would be tempted to repackage Chiron vaccine and sell it? October 16, 2004 -- ALBANY Heartless flu-vaccine middlemen have been approaching New York hospitals with offers to sell the desperately needed drug for as much as 15 times the regular price, officials said yesterday. Some of the shameless price gougers were peddling a $65 vial that contains four doses for $300 while officials at one hospital were told they could have the lifesaving vaccine for an astounding $1,000 a vial. At least 10 hospitals in the state said they have been contacted recently by profiteers trying to exploit a drastic shortage of the vaccine, according to a new survey. "The fact that there is price gouging going on during a public-health crisis where we lost half our existing national supply of the vaccine is repulsive," said Kasey Thompson, of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The money-hungry "vaccine scalpers" obtain their supplies from unknown sources and pop up during a crisis to cash in. There have been no allegations that the vaccine being offered is fake. The pharmacists' group surveyed its members, and the numbers from New York showed that 10 of the 21 hospitals that responded said the vaccine had been dangled before them at highly elevated prices. Almost all of the outraged hospital execs said they refused to buy it at such obscene prices. Kevin Dahill, CEO of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council representing 24 not-for-profit health-care institutions, said two hospitals were offered flu vaccine for $1,000 or more a vial. Huntington Hospital had been contacted by Meds-Stat, a Florida-based distributor being sued for gouging in its home state and Kansas, while New Island Hospital was contacted by a company named Health Plus. City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden said yesterday he's heard no reports of gouging at city hospitals, but warned that "there's an uneven supply [of vaccine] throughout the city." The flu-shot crisis began last week when the British government, concerned about possible contamination, shut down the plant where about half of the U.S. supply of vaccine is manufactured. State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's office has received a dozen calls from New York hospitals and medical groups saying they are being victimized by the vaccine middlemen. But Spitzer spokesman Paul Larrabee said there is little his office can do because the state's price-gouging law covers only certain products, such as bottled water and fuel, sold during states of emergency. The state Consumer Protection Board set up a toll-free number (800) 697-1220 to report cases of suspected price gouging. The selling of the Chiron vaccine to US distributors was a business transaction. Chiron has a record of the companies to whom they sold the vaccine. It was a shipping transaction; there is a record of the transfer of the vaccine from Chiron to the US distributors. It was a Customs transaction: After all, the vaccine was imported from a foreign country. US Customs must also have a record of those shipments. Several months ago, beef was recalled, in the wake of the Mad Cow Disease scare, beef in the northwest US was recalledOver the decades, there have been numerous recalls of contaminated -- even allegedly contaminated -- foods and drugs. Heck -- dangerous toys are recalled from time to time. Given the above, why is the disposition of the Chiron vaccine not under anyone's control? Various agencies of the federal government have precedent, procedures and authority to seize dangerous products. So why hasn't the FDA -- or whichever agency that can do so--done so in the case of the Chiron vaccine? We both know that it should be confiscated and destroyed. End of Maloney comment. Of course, everything he says is correct. Yet we have heard nothing about the destruction of six million doses of Chiron flu vaccine in the US. It could have been accomplished very quickly. Perhaps it was. We dont know. Perhaps it was destroyed or shipped somewhere to cover up the fact that numbers of doses had already been sold out the doors of these US warehouses. And of course we have those million doses of Chiron vaccine that were shipped from England in JULY of this year. What has happened to them in the interim? I have emailed press relations at Chiron, asking for a comment on the Sabin Russell Oct.7 article in the SF Chronicle. So far, no reply. Note that in Russells article, the statement is made that the six million doses of Chiron vaccine already in the US are outside the control of the FDA and Chiron. AP and other sources are reporting that several thousand doses of flu vaccine were quarantined by the FDA, just as they were to be given to people in Florida. The vaccine is unlicensed for safety in the US, and is manufactured by Shire, a company that is owned by a Canadian firm. This raises two points. First, some Americans going to Canada for flu shots may be getting the Shire version. And two, now you see how easy it is for unlicensed vaccine to slip into the US. The Florida pharmacy that was distributing the Shire shots to clinics or a clinic apparently bought them from a larger distributor. Well, what about the SIX MILLION doses of banned Chiron flu vaccine that are already in the US, sitting in distributors' warehouses? What has happened to them? Have some of them been resold? As readers know, I have been pressing hard to get some wider coverage of the REAL flu vaccine scandal of 2004: AT LEAST 6 MILLION DOSES OF CONTAMINATED CHIRON FLU VACCINE WERE ALREADY SHIPPED TO US DISTRIBUTORS' WAREHOUSES BEFORE THE FINAL SAFETY TESTS WERE DONE AND BEFORE THE BAN WAS LAID ON. The wider coverage has not happened. Behind such blackouts, there are usually a whole host of machinations involved. You might remember a little thing called Watergate and ensuing unraveling scandals. In that case, at least part of the overall operation was finally revealed. I'm quite sure that this vaccine scandal, the real one, has been stamped NATIONAL SECURITY. That CDC personnel and other law enforcement types have been enlisted to keep the lid on and keep the American people in the dark. The reasoning on it goes this way: if America becomes aware of the true problem, panic will ensue; people will become confused about whether to get the vaccine at all; confidence in vaccines will take a hit; the whole FDA apparatus which exists to protect America from toxic drugs and vaccines will be exposed as a sham and a scam; pharmaceutical companies will take a further hit on top of the recent Vioxx and antidepressant scandals. Behind this so-called reasoning, there is a far more devastating consequence for the current occupant of the White House, for whom both the CDC and the FDA work. Bush will be seen as having defaulted on his responsibility, since all this madness occurred on his watch. And this alone could send the election to Kerry. Bush recently went on the record and said federal health agencies acted swiftly and prevented doses of Chiron vaccine from reaching US shores. This obviously is not true. It is the opposite of truth. If, as I suspect, given the nature of many people when confronted with the oppportunity to make money, doses of Chiron vaccine have gone out the doors of US distributors' warehouses, there is now an operation to conceal that, to change records, to alter numbers, to silence potential witnesses, to hold the line on a lie. In which case, we have the classic coupling of a crime and a coverup of that crime. From the point of view of the criminals and the coverup artists, the least important thing is the health and safety of the American people. You should know that certain personnel at the CDC have top-secret security clearances. They are sent to Langley where they are trained by the CIA. Then they return to Atlanta to continue to work at the CDC with these new clearances. These people, in the current situation, could be briefed on the truth and told how to handle it, how to keep it under the rocks. Most Americans generally write off these drug-vaccine situations as honest mistakes. That is a function of belief, not evidence. We have the evidence that millions of doses of tainted flu vaccine WERE sent to the US and, according to the SF Chronicle (see story below), were at that point outside the control of the FDA and Chiron. These facts alone demand honest action. It is not happening. No warnings have been issued by the CDC, which warns the nation when three people from Maine to Mexico die of some purported new germ. In recent years, the CDC has made a living off issuing warnings. Yet in this situation, nothing. Readers of this site also know that I have decided---even though I do not support Bush or Kerry---to go to Democrats and hold out this story for their use. I have spoken with press people at both the DNC and the Kerry committee. I see no indication, so far, that they want to touch this thing. I have contacted several reporters at major outlets. Nothing back from them, either. Do you find this vaccine-scandal story posted at high-volume alternative-health sites? I don't. I laid out details of the scandal for several radio audiences, the largest of which was Coast to Coast AM (ten million listeners?). Yesterday, I did two radio shows. Roy Tuckman's Something's Happening (KPFK in LA), and Cloak and Dagger, operating out of Canada. Aside from the cover-up itself, there is a hypnotic disconnect at work. People just don't want to believe what is going on. They invent reasons to dismiss what is given to them. They treat it as a piece of craziness. If they bother to read the SF Chronicle piece that broke the scandal, they don't seem to understand what it states. It doesn't register. But if the Washington Post and The New York Times and NBC came on board with the truth, these same people would immediately believe, because the "hypnotic commands" would now be coming from a trusted source. Trusted source=controller. Handler. We are now talking about a deep function of major media. In effect, they act as intelligence case officers to the whole population. When they say jump, the people jump and move toward the goal established by the individuals and groups that regularly feed stories to the press. Cracking that egg takes a great deal of work.
