Hallo all, long time no see, I've been on no-mail

for a while in order to give priority to the

garden.

Just peeked in at the website, and an ADD question

I can't resist.

Diane,

There is no single magic pill that makes ADD go away,

whether it is pharmaceutical or natural.

I speak from bitter experience as an 'organizationally

challenged' person who owes her cleanish house to FlyLady.

My bottom line is that I don't know if ADD exists, but

if it does, I have it. My son is a lot like me and he

got tested and has an official label, whatever that's

worth.

The right teaching methods, the right amount of stimulation

in life, an orderly clean environment, it all plays a role

along with sound nutrition.

We have always had a decent diet but even so we have been

helped immensely by a whole wild food in supplement form.

I don't know if it is the amino acids, the anti-oxidants,

the essential fatty acids or the complete and balanced

minerals that do the trick. (it's all in there)

I just know our lives have changed for the good since this

food came into our lives, and both Alex and I are better

people if we take it. I wrote his story out once and for all,

and some people here have seen it, so if you'd like to

read it send a blank email to alexstory

It will arrive in your inbox after you confirm that you

want it.

There are also educational alternatives to medication as well. Interactive

Metronome and Play Attention are great programs.

The ingredients to Focus are all good. The rooibos and camomile on their own

will work. The ginko biloba is for alertness, but they don't issue a very

necessary warning with it. People with low blood pressure or who are on

blood thinners should not take ginko! Otherwise, its a great herb for those

who can benefit from it.

Quoted from: http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/HerbsWho/0,3923

4017%7CGinkgo+Biloba,00.html

Ginkgo Biloba

Other Names: Ginkgo, Japanese Silver Apricot, Kew Tree, Maidenhair Tree,

Yinhsing

Who is this for?

Uses

Increasing amounts of evidence show that herbal products made from ginkgo

leaves may help to relieve a condition known as cerebral insufficiency,

which is a decrease in the blood supply to the brain. Frequently associated

with aging, cerebral insufficiency may cause confusion, dementia, hearing

problems, and memory loss. Dementia is an increasing deficiency in thought

processes caused by brain damage or disease. Chemicals in ginkgo leaves are

known to thin the blood and they may also normalize muscle tone in blood

vessel walls. Both of these effects may improve blood flow to the brain,

thereby increasing oxygen and possibly relieving conditions associated with

poor blood flow. Additionally, in laboratory studies, ginkgo leaf

preparations seemed to prevent cell destruction caused by beta-amyloid

proteins, which are chemicals thought to be involved in causing Alzheimer’s

disease. This effect needs further study to determine its potential. Whether

supplementation with ginkgo leaf extract may improve memory and thinking for

individuals without cognitive impairment has not been proven.

In my consulting practice I teach clients that with any disease it is

important to find the root cause. Whether it be nutritional

deficiencies, accumulated toxins and poisons in the body, emotional

stress or physical trauma. Address the root cause and you balance the

body.

In ADD and ADHD there is often a weakness of the sympathetic nervous

system as well as a corresponding overactivity of the parasympathetic

nervous system. You can tell if a child is suffering from ADD or ADHD

by looking at their pupils. If the pupils are enlarged this is a sign

of excess sympathetic nervous system activity. In this case remedies

which are nervines such as lavender oil or chamomile are calming. If

the pupils are small then there is an excess of parasympathetic nervous

system activity and stimulants such as caffeine (preferably green tea)

will have a calming effect.

Nutrients that support the sympathetic nervous system and adrenal

function such as licorice root are important.

Essential fatty acids should also be taken as they are essential to

brain function as the brain is mostly made up of fat. Protein is also

very beneficial. Feeding a child who has ADD or ADHD a high protein

breakfast that includes eggs and red meat will help them to be more

focused. Simple carbs (such as in cereals) should be avoided.

Heavy metal poisoning (such as with vaccines) is also a consideration

for children suffering from ADD or ADHD and a gentle detoxification may

be beneficial.

Leaky gut syndrome and hypoglycemia may also contribute to ADD or ADHD

in which case licorice root would also be beneficial.

There isn't really any one thing to take to correct the issue. It's a

matter of finding out what is causing the imbalance in the body and

taking the necessary steps to bring the body back into balance. If

you'd like more information, please feel free to e-mail me.

OK...here is where I get a little irritated by this so-called condition. It

has been my experience that ADD and ADHD is a manufactured condition. The

manifest being the public school systems. Our litigious society has all but

taken the tools teahcers need to control the children. The medical and

pharmacutical lobbies sensed the weakness and turned all failing doctors and

pharmacy students and made them teachers (tongue in cheek). But seriously, the

schools preach to stay away from drugs and yet teach them that to take thier

medicine is the way we get them to deal with being KIDS!!!

The latchkey society where children grow up behind computers and not out

excersizing is all but too obvious where this build up of energy and aggression

comes from. Now remember if it is a 'condition' then it must be

'treated'...enter the medical industry...cha-ching. And let us not forget the

ridalin or effexor...enter the pharmacutical lobby...cha-ching!

The states that now forbid the suggestion of educators to put the

children on drugs attests to the over diagnosis and over prescibing of these

drugs. Let the children play and teach them discipline while they are young! No

the moniker for most of these kids is not ADD or ADHD it is BRAT!

David, do you have a child with ADD or do you have personal experience with

ADD yourself? Do a little research, my friend. ADD is real. Perhaps the way

its being treated is wrong, but cannot call a well-behaved child a 'brat'

just because he/she has a neurological problem. If you have seen the

frustration a highly intelligent and active child goes through when he/she

sits and listens to an entire lesson only to find at the end that the most

important facts haven't 'connected' in the brain, you may understand. ADD

testing is a long and arduous route. Its not just diagnosed by one doctor or

pharmacist, but by a whole team of independant specialists, from

psychologists, to eye/hearing/speech specialists, to neurologists... the

list is long. Testing can take up to a year.

You give no logical grounds for your statements, which I find highly

offensive and emotional and 'BRATtish'. Don't brush aside very real things

experienced by very real people just because you don't believe in it

yourself or suffer with it yourself. You're entitled to your opinion without

being insulting to those who have a different opinion or knowledge of a

subject.

This group is about finding alternatives to drugs, not running the people

who need the drugs down. If you have an alternative therapy or healing

method for ADD, then, by all means, give that.

Learning center touts exercise for ADHD

Learning center touts exercise for ADHD Center touts exercise for ADHD

Adrienne Albani had tried a number of drugs to treat her son John's

attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, but all had negative side

effects. In frustration, the Dedham mother enrolled her son last spring in the

Dore Center, an alternative treatment program in Needham for children with ADHD,

dyslexia, and other learning difficulties.

Through daily balance and hand-eye coordination exercises, John, now a

seventh-grader, saw his focus sharply improve, along with his writing and

reading. He no longer blurted answers in class, and found he could do his

homework quietly by himself without being distracted.

Albani said she was doubtful at first of the center's contention that physical

exercises like tossing a beanbag and balancing on a wobble board could improve

his focus and mental processing. But after just six months in the two-year

program, which costs $4,500, her son had shown impressive gains, she said.

''I was skeptical because it's not a proven treatment, " she said. ''But it's

helped him so much. "

The Dore program is based on recent research suggesting that many learning

disorders involve a part of the brain, called the cerebellum, increasingly

believed to play a role in both movement and mental processing. Some studies

have indicated a link between an underdeveloped cerebellum and learning

difficulties, raising hope that physical drills specifically stimulating that

part of the brain can reduce learning and attention problems.

The Needham center, which has 300 active clients and is one of five Dore

Centers in the United States, touts its program as a permanent solution that

takes aim at the neurological root of the problem rather than the symptoms.

Just as lifting weights builds muscles, repeating specific exercises can, in

time, teach the brain to handle information more efficiently and reflexively,

Dore proponents say.

''It's a rewiring of the brain, " said Dore's David Pfeil. ''It's dealing

directly with the source of the difficulties. If someone has a stone in their

shoe, they don't take an Advil. "

Pfeil said Dore is ''drug-neutral " but many parents are drawn to the center's

drug-free approach. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates

that 4.4 million children ages 4-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD and more than

half are receiving medication as treatment.

The center's techniques, however, are not widely accepted by the mainstream

medical community.

Jeremy Schmahmann, a neurologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, said there

is growing evidence that the cerebellum, long considered purely responsible for

motor control, also influences behavior and intellect. But the theories that

learning disorders are caused by an underdeveloped cerebellum, and that Dore's

exercise program can improve brain development, are unproven, he said.

Nonetheless, the Dore program has attracted parents anxious to help their

children and increasingly worried about the side effects of Ritalin and other

stimulants used to treat ADHD. Those concerns have escalated in recent weeks as

the Food and Drug Administration is considering adding warnings to the drugs

about an increased risk of cardiovascular problems.

In 2003, 7.8 percent of school-age children were reported to have an ADHD

diagnosis, according to the CDC.

Edward Hallowell, a psychiatrist and founder of a Sudbury center specializing

in attention deficit and learning disorders, enrolled his teenage son, Jack, in

Dore after tutoring and medication failed to improve his reading skills. Like

Albani, Hallowell was dubious at first, but was soon convinced.

''When I first heard about it, I thought, 'There is no way,' " he said.

''Physical exercise isn't going to help someone read. "

But after four months in the program, his son was enjoying reading more than

he ever had.

Hallowell, a paid consultant for Dore, said that there is a ''plausible link "

between targeted exercise and brain development, but that it is unconfirmed.

''Whether or not physical exercise rewires the cerebellum, that's up for

grabs, " he said. ''We can't recommend it with the same certainty as medication. "

The rising number of children labeled with the disorder has stirred criticism

of overdiagnosis and overmedication, fueling demand for alternative approaches.

The Dore program was created in England six years ago by Wynford Dore, who was

trying to find a cure for his daughter's severe dyslexia.

He assembled a research team of neurologists and instructed them to ''ignore

conventional wisdom. " They eventually came to believe that, with enough

practice, the brain could be altered so that the disorder's symptoms all but

disappear.

''The brain is far more elastic than we previously thought, " Dore said.

Dore points to a 2002 independent, peer-reviewed study by two British

researchers that found that program participants caught up to their peers in

reading and shed ADHD symptoms as evidence of the program's success.

There have been no American studies of the program.

At a recent evaluation at the Dore Center, Conor McTavish, an 11-year-old who

lives in Dorchester, said he's less interested in the theory than the results.

''I think the exercises have helped, " he said. ''I can concentrate better, and

I'm better at a lot of things
