Guest guest
I see this as just an ongoing process and effort to, almost always, shift the blame from the real cause and the people who are protected from that blame. In allopathic medicine, whatever goes wrong, whether with surgury, radiation, problems caused by drugs, it is the usual course to shift the blame on to the patient. Your genetic type..., we just don't know all there is to know yet, maybe someday science..., You need this, do you want to die?...How are you going to get well, if you don't take your medicine? etc. etc. And when they have burned, slashed, and poisoned all they could and the final outcome is terminal in many times brought about by their efforts, the almost always response is " Well, we did all we could " . implying that the enemy won in the fight but he fought noblely in trying to " save " the patient.. This even if the patient was " doctored " to death, which is very common.. F. I don't believe that I have ever read a more offensive statement to parents of regressive autistic spectrum children, as well as myself, as the following line of unadulterated nonsense that follows: " If Baron-Cohen is right, autism is not just a disease in need of a cure. It's a mental style that people can learn to accommodate. Sometimes it's even a gift. " A gift? Surely this was a sick joke or a typographical error, I thought. While I do feel that my 9 year-old autistic twins, Ben and Joe are gifts from God; there autism was assuredly not. The chronic " gut " issues, immune abnormalities, seizures, rashes, self-injurious behaviors and inability to communicate (or even speak a single word in 9 years of life in Ben's case) is surely not a " mental style " that my sons chose. It is indeed a disease very much in need of a cure. Years ago, Bruno Bettleheim blamed mothers for autism; it certainly appears that Mr. Baron-Cohen now blames the children, and Newsweek is promoting this unfounded view. That is a shame.
