Guest guest
Mon, 14 Jul 2003 12:03:45 -0500 HSI - Jenny Thompson Space Case Space Case Health Sciences Institute e-Alert July 14, 2003 ************************************************************** Dear Reader, What could the health of your liver possibly have to do with a recent simulated space flight study? To answer that question, I'll start by going back to an HSI Members Alert from more three years ago (January 2000), in which we first told you about Active Hexose Correlated Compound (AHCC); a breakthrough disease-fighting treatment and immune system booster. Made from hybridized Japanese mushrooms, AHCC has already proven to increase the activity of natural killer cells by as much as 300 percent. Published research has shown how individuals suffering from breast, prostate, and other forms of cancer have experienced dramatic improvement and even full remission after taking AHCC. In recent years, further studies have demonstrated that AHCC may also be effective in fighting common (and often fatal) liver diseases associated with hepatitis C. ----------------------------- National crisis ----------------------------- Hepatitis C is currently the most common chronic blood-borne infection in the U.S. It affects about 4.5 million Americans, and according to public health officials, those numbers are expected to keep growing. Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop calls it " an even graver threat to our public health " than HIV and AIDS, because hepatitis C infections can lead to cirrhosis (a debilitating liver disease) and can even transform into primary liver cancer. Hepatitis C is caused by a virus, which is spread by contact with contaminated blood or organs. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, you are at increased risk of hepatitis C if you received a blood transfusion or a solid organ transplant before 1992; if you received blood product for clotting problems produced before 1987; if you have ever been on kidney dialysis; or if you have existing liver disease. The disease can also be contracted though illegal intravenous drug use, tattoo and piercing equipment, and rarely, through sexual contact. If you think you are at risk, you can ask your doctor for a blood test to determine if you are infected. ----------------------------- The new road ----------------------------- The mainstream treatment for hepatitis C usually calls for interferon injections - alone or in combination with ribavirin, an antiviral medication. But there are often considerable side effects. Interferon can cause flu-like side symptoms, depression, and hair thinning, and can lower the production of white blood cells and platelets. Ribavirin is known to cause severe anemia and serious birth defects. And there have also been reports of people on combination interferon/ribavirin therapy having suicidal impulses. Now scientists believe they may have found an effective, natural alternative with AHCC. At the AHCC Research Association's 8th symposium in Sapparo, Japan, researchers presented studies and individual patient cases indicating that AHCC can successfully address hepatitis C and other liver diseases. A doctor from the Centers for Integrative and Complementary Medicine in New York reported that AHCC had helped hepatitis C patients drop their viral load by as much as 89 percent in as little as four months. In a Japanese study, 40 hepatitis patients treated with AHCC experienced more energy and appetite, increased platelet counts, and a halt in the progressive development of cirrhosis. Other researchers presented additional data at the symposium supporting AHCC's use in fighting cirrhosis and liver cancer. ----------------------------- Rocket mice ----------------------------- In the January 2000 Members Alert we were the first to tell you about an AHCC product called ImmPower-AHCC. Just recently, ImmPower-AHCC was used in a study that tested the effect of AHCC on immune systems compromised by space flight. Because space travel puts considerable stress on astronauts' immune systems, researchers at the Morehouse School of Medicine (in conjunction with NASA and the National Space Biomedical Research Institute), set out to examine the effects of ImmPower-AHCC on the immune systems of mice after simulated space flight. The mice that were given ImmPower- AHCC were shown to have a significantly higher survival rate than the mice that didn't receive the supplement. Results also indicated that mice in the ImmPower-AHCC group were much more likely to clear bacteria from their systems. Based on these results, additional studies are under consideration that would measure the effect of ImmPower-AHCC on astronauts after actual space flight. ----------------------------- Good news in the mail ----------------------------- I don't know how many HSI members are astronauts, but you don't have to orbit the earth to appreciate the effects of an enhanced immune system. After the original article about ImmPower-AHCC appeared in the Members Alert, we received a letter from an HSI member named Marie, who was struggling with breast cancer. Marie told us that after just three months of taking ImmPower-AHCC, a cancer blood test revealed that not only had the tumor stopped growing, but it also shrank 20 percent. Marie said, " I am convinced that it was due to ImmPower. I am grateful for all the natural products I learn about in the health letters, especially ImmPower in Health Sciences Institute. Could ImmPower be the answer to cancer? " You can imagine how gratified we were to hear about Marie's results. When we called Rick Jahnke at American Biosciences (the supplier of ImmPower-AHCC) to share the news with him, he told us that they had received a number of similar responses like Marie's from other HSI members. ImmPower-AHCC is available through the Harmony Company. For more information you can call toll-free: 800-422-5518. And to answer Marie's question: Until we receive the results of further clinical trials, it's too early to jump to the conclusion that ImmPower-AHCC might be a cure, or an " answer " to cancer. But the evidence so far would certainly indicate that, for some, it's a highly effective way to strengthen the immune system - especially as a treatment for hepatitis C. ************************************************************** ... and another thing I don't mean to pry, but is your p53 getting enough stimulation? I hope so. In the e-Alert " P53, Where Are You? " (6/26/03) I told you how an elevated selenium level in the blood is associated with a significantly better chance that a tumor- suppressing gene called p53 will be activated. And to that, HSI Panelist Richard Cohan, D.D.S., M.B.A., has some important information to add. In an e-mail sent last week, Dr. Cohan wrote: " It is also critically important that adequate amounts of reduced glutathione be available. Apparently, the ideal ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione to stimulate the p53 gene has been determined to be 400:1! " A good way to assure that adequate amounts of reduced glutathione are produced is to consume 600-900 mg of NAC (N- Acetylcysteine) three times daily. Alternately, 100-200 mg of reduced glutathione daily, if tolerated, can be consumed instead. Both formulas are taken in between meals. A third alternate is to consume the NAC in a multivitamin formula. All of these products are available from PURE Encapsulations (purecaps.com). " My thanks to Dr. Cohan for this very useful tip about boosting the p53 gene.
