Guest guest
Many of you have asked if there is some way our community can help in SoCal .. . . for those of you who aren't familiar, UAE (United Aromatherapy Effort) http://unitedaromatherapy.org/ works closely with ERMI (Emergency Response Massage International) http://www.ermassage.org/ These folks aid emergency responders and help provide aromatherapy relief to the shelters and those affected. The needs are for respiratory help (environmental sprays, synergies, essential oils that can be placed on masks, etc.) and massage oils, burn lotions/sprays as well as other items. I am initially donating a case of our Ultrasonic humidifier/diffusers, so any respiratory pure essential oil blends and single oils will be welcome. Environmental spritzers will be wonderful as the air is very, very arid and any moisturizing/humidification will be extremely helpful. As you might imagine, emotional support type of oils are also needed, as well as any other aromatherapy comfort tools. Bottles, dispensing caps and spritzers will also be in need. The efforts of ERMI are coming together and the teams should be deployed within the next couple weeks. If you know of someone in the area of San Diego who is in touch with the massage therapists who are already working at QualCom, please let me know so that we can coordinate with them and put them in touch with ERMI. If you know of an area in California that could be served and have contacts there, please let me know also and I will pass this on to ERMI. Guest guest
-Please don't send Essential Oils. What will they do except make those with allergies have a severe reaction. Sheesh!
Guest guest
Thanks, Liz . . .To make this a little more clear for those of you who aren't familiar. UAE http://unitedaromatherapy.org/ coalesces professional aromatherapy companies to provide products to support the efforts of ERMI http://www.ermassage.org/ (who are the massage professionals who actually deploy). This appeal was primarily for natural product companies; however, any individual can support the effort by monetary donation. These orgs originally formed after 9/11 to support rescue workers in NY with massage, respiratory and aromatherapy relief. The efforts have continued during other disasters like Katrina and volunteers from the aromatherapy and massage communities have quietly given of their services and products to provide much-needed stress relief, respiratory support, burn remedies, etc. Many of our good aromatherapy companies on this list provide products and tools - this is a plea for the same product support for UAE/ERMI who will soon be deployed to SoCal. The situation in SoCal is somewhat different, and we imagine that teams will be not only be supporting rescue workers and firemen, but also helping dispense our aromatic products to victims, as well. The incidence of allergies to essential oils is rare, however, Liz is right that professionals will be making the decisions about any products supplied or used. We expect that companies who already have all the legal required information on their products will provide any additional instructions or specifics necessary for the teams. This doesn't mean that individual support is not welcome . . . You can always donate money. And, no doubt as the organization grows, there will be other volunteer opportunities, I suspect. I am lending a hand to help coordinate things here on the West Coast and getting the word out here on Chris' list to our many good aromatherapy/natural products companies for their support. I welcome any comments or suggestions directly to me that might help these efforts be more successful. If you do not have a business, but feel that you can provide help with either essential oils or products, but might feel unsure of their appropriateness - email me and let's talk; I'll make sure that you can be involved in a meaningful way. If you have a new business and haven't done anything like this before, email me if you need some direction and support to enable you to help out. These fires are going to continue on into November; if the Santa Ana winds return, they will again head westward towards the more populated areas. They are unprecedented. We also know that the years to come are going to be volatile and more storms/fires face us. Anything we in the aromatherapy community can do to be prepared for the future and to help now is welcome. Thanks. Be well, Marcia Elston/Samara Botane http://www.wingedseed.com http://www.aromaconnection.org " If we treat the earth as disposable, we shouldn't be surprised when it treats us the same way. Hi llaci2003 Essential oils may only have become *the rage* recently for you, but the use of essential oils to assist health problems goes back to at least the 1930's (and before). Long before the use of antibiotics and modern medication. I have been involved with AT (Aromatherapy) for over 20 years (and qualified in AT in 1993 in the UK - and continue learning...). Marcia has run a successful AT supply company (as does the owner of this list) for at least 15 years to my knowledge, possibly longer. We are all well aware of safety issues and the need to take precautions when recommending EO's to anyone. Whilst the incidence of allergic reaction to fragrance oils - to a lesser and greater degree - is relatively high, the same is not true for Essential oils, WHEN they are diluted and used correctly. Problems, when they do arise, are invariably caused by misuse. That is, using them undiluted and/or over a period of time without a break. Like using any substance incorrectly, this is just asking for trouble, and trouble will find you. I am at a loss to understand why you seem to think that any UAE volunteer would *not* check allergy status before offering oils (or anything actually) to a person in distress. That's top of the list - these days - in any situation. As a practitioner, one of the first question on my consultation form was " Have you any allergies that you are aware of? " That question was there not just for the EO's I might use but also for the carrier oils, some of which can also cause problems for the hyper-allergy sufferer. Those involved in AT, practitioners, suppliers, educators (proviso! - other than *some* MLM and quick-start-make-a-buck-fly-by-night companies) are more than well aware of allergy problems and take them very seriously.
