Guest guest
Namaskar Group, Can anyone share a homemade recipe for infants that could help for weight gain? The little one needing it is very underweight and beginning to show signs of not thriving. He is only 8 weeks old and the mother apparently is not producing enough milk. I will work with her stress levels and suggest shatavari and ashwaganda to supplement the fenugreek that she is already taking. This baby is the one I have already mentioned to the group several times in the past month. The mom's nipples were very sore, but have greatly improved. The baby was in the hospital with two bacterial infections at 2 1/2 weeks. He is beginning to appear dangerously underweight. Support is most appreciated! Guest guest
Kim, one thing to work on is get her pumping...a lot. Then she can get an oversupply, let it sit half an hour, skim off the fat and give him that first. His gut has been compromised with the antibiotics, I hate to see him on formula, but it is necessary ifhe failing to thrive. I think others will have more to offer. It has been said that mothers eating a fattier (good fats) diet will fatten her milk. Bring on the pudding and avocados. Guest guest
Thank you very much! I have forwarded this link and am certain it will be most useful. This mom has several formula recipes now that her naturopath gave her. I still would be curious how ayurveda approaches infant formula. Obviously it is a last resort. The mom's chest definitely gets tight and milk hardly flows when she is stressed. This I am lovingly, patiently addressing. As always, I extend my gratitude to this forum and all its contributors. warmly, Kim Luchau Infant/Mom Craniosacral Therapist Kaua'i, Hawaii phone: 808-822-4644 --- On Wed, 7/16/08, noeljayashree <jayashree.noel wrote: > noeljayashree <jayashree.noel > PerinatalAyurveda forum Re: formula recipe for underweight infant > ayurveda > Wednesday, July 16, 2008, 1:06 AM > not sure if i can direct you to another , ( i am > sure yasha > here will give you excellent advice) but one group that > deals with this > is " mobi " mothers overcoming breastfeeding > issues. > they are great, skilled and compassionate:) > > blessings
Guest guest
Mom's milk seems to be the best solution for the baby, as gut flora are disturbed by antibiotics. More than weight, immune system building is the important contribution by mom. While herbal approach is already being tried, a drugless approach involving accu pressure 1- 2 minutes on each point, taking just 10-15 minutes thrice a day may be helpful. Easily locatable points are given at http://www.herbalshop.com/Acupressure/Acupressure_54.html But be gentle in the beginning, gradually increasing pressure/time. dr bhate _________________________________ The little one needing it is very underweight and beginning to show signs of not thriving. Guest guest
Great site, thanks for posting, Dr. Bhate Yes, increasing mom's supply would be most direct and valuable support, even while one may or may not have to attempt to find a formula that gives comfort with nourishment, and certainly providing extra probiotic support for Baby. See files for notes from a recent talk given at the southwest Vitamin Cottage stores, on Happy Baby Tummies. You will see some brief notes about qualities of several types of formulas and what doshic influences, toxins, ama, etc are likely to be at issue. For immediately increasing supply, REST, FULL BODY WARM OIL MASSAGE (reminder here of the self-massage guidelines at www.sacredwindow.com/articles), the accupressure points sound good, dietary factors are very big here, and if possible, herbal support that includes shatavari and probably a dipana (agni/digestive fires supportive) herb also, and some jatamamsi and brahmi, or a little saraswati churna in small portion sounds good for her, to ground the mind. Hot baths, add calming eoils if available. some mothers get results applying fennel oil to breasts, though it does not address longevity solutions. If Mom is taking fenugreek in capsules, she may have complications in these days early postpartum, with tender innards the caps tend to stick as they absorb bodily moisture from the membranes, and then the ground dry fenugreek is very harsh on tender insides. Strong fenugreek tea will be much wiser - 1 tsp boil 4-5 minutes max in cup of water (make fresh daily). 2-3 cups/day would be helpful. Add tsp ghee or even organic butter or sesame oil (ghee tastes better) and be sure she has ample vata pacifying warm freshly cooked well seasoned for agni foods etc, see files, with extra ghee added to just about everything, and foods served extra moist for a while yet. With appetite strong (can enhance with even fresh ginger slice with pinch sugar or salt and squeeze lime before meal and ample roasted garlic, which also enhances milk production, and other suitable seasonings esp the lactation enhancers, in the foods) she should be eating 5X a day herself including enough carbs and all food groups in balance, nourishing yummy snacks and warm milk tonics. By the way, we are not talking about ingesting milk making milk, directly. We are talking about the tremendous vata pacifying qualities of milk, and other foods, which reduce tension, enhance serotonin, and support body's quick response in the direction it is made to go, and will go given the chance, which is ample supply for Baby. It is about getting the right qUALITIES in her experience in abundance, to nourish the feeling of abundance in her physiology. It is about much more than just energy medicine although the points certainly may help the physical to work better when obstructed or weak energy. The thing is, bringing a new soul in involves grounding structures, moisture and smoothness, fluidity, good chemistry, warmth, and strong transformative functioning of the physical body. THat's earth, water and fire element focus by my experience most important and lasting influences. The air and space elements, including which govern the nervous system and subtler energies, need soothing and reconnecting supports. So often in the early postpartum days, what may appear emotional problem is really body responding emotionally to not knowing how to attend to itself and baby both, confusions often most quickly corrected by taking care of Mom's physiology, yes. We all know a woman is born to naturally provide well for her baby. So when it isn't happening, I encourage everyone to keep asking and exploring the wisdom and common sense of Ma Nature until the answers show up, as long as your client is willing to work with you on this. I really like Dr. Bhate's reminder of the significant difference in immune system strength with breast milk vs formulas. I also like Vicki's suggestion to give the cream milk first to help rebuild, if possible. There are formulas on the forum, if you search the archives or files, not sure where or I loose this page. If she wants a couple homemade formulas one with diluted and balanced unhomogenized cow, one with rice protein/balanced, which are not so hard on the digestion as many even homemade formulas, email me Ayurdoulas (at) gmail.com. Guest guest
Hi Mavis - Did I miss something re the massage chart? Not sure what that's about. Yes, of course fenugreek helps many, or it wouldn't be so well known. I find the moms who are heartier to begin with, and later postpartum do better with pill/capsule or whatever they can get. I just have seen moms have actual pain with it, and no real results, and the reasons are very simple, and common to mothers in the early postpartum weeks, as discussed in previous post, hence my caution. What do you know about the algae and spirolina why it is so helpful? Is it the bvities, minerals, protein, or? Guest guest
the massage chart, i meant the website that dr. bhate posted with all the pressure points to increase milk. i had heard about the bluegreen algae from some lactation consultants, it is very high in protein, minerals and lipids and efa's, so i imagine it helps give a boost. it is lactogenic and helps increase the fat content in the breastmilk here is an interesting website about spirulina http://www.antennaindia.org/detail_page.phtml? & username=guest (AT) antennaindia (DOT) org & p\ assword=9999 & groups=ANTINDIA & page=spirulina also a good site: http://www.mobimotherhood.org/MM/article-diet.aspx thanks, mavis Mavis Gewant Sacred Artist & Doula www.sacredmotherarts.com www.gentlecaredoulaservice.com
Guest guest
Thanks MAvis - Great links you've shared. Except for the rec of raw salad in mother's diet, I'm sure many are helped greatly by those resources. It is interesting to me that somehow seaweeds are not generally used with classical ayurvedics, and I don't know why. They seem to me very valuable nutrient rich vegetable sources, and we sometimes cook them into soups or veggetable dishes for postpartum moms. - or sometimes we make moist rice and steamed veg " sushi " rolls (always a hit) with a lime/cayenne/salty/sweet dipping sauce, toasted sesame seeds with a well cooked and seasoned lentil soup of some sort. The spirolina - probably as " easily digested and assimilated " as it is, will create less side effects on mama or baby digestion when not taken cold temp, or with fruits, unless maybe papaya. I've been thinking of you and how wonderful it would be to take your Shri Yantra painting class. Just bought a little set of 4 entry protection yantras as I have a west entrance area, from my friend Sherri Silverman who recently published a beautiful Vastu book. Love them! Warm Regards, Ysha > i had heard about the bluegreen algae from some lactation consultants, it is very high in protein, minerals and lipids and efa's, so i imagine it helps give a boost. it is lactogenic and helps
