United Press International reported on Feb. 26, " Resolved on

the cloning ban — The South Dakota state legislature, acting at the instigation

of members of Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum, has passed a resolution in support

of congressional legislation to " completely ban human cloning. " On Thursday, the

state senate passed the resolution by a vote of 32 to 1. On Friday, the state

house approved the same language 63 to 4. Supporters intend for the move to

place added pressure on South Dakota's two U.S. Senators — Democrats Tim Johnson

and Tom Daschle, the Senate majority leader — to vote to oppose cloning and to

get Daschle to bring the bill up on the Senate floor for a vote. "

Having had to retreat from legislative attempts to establish a

national ID card through Social Security numbers or unique health care

identifiers, Congress seems to be trying a new tack to implement this wholly

un-American idea. Congress has suggested that the Department of Transportation

develop " model guidelines for encoded data on driver's licenses. "

On July 31, 2001, the House of Representatives passed the

Weldon-Stupak Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2001 (H.R. 2505) with bipartisan

support (265 to 162.) The Senate failed to take up the bill during the first

session of the 107th Congress. On January 28, 2002, Senator Sam Brownback

introduced the companion bill (S. 1899), but more co-sponsors are needed to

force action on the floor. Urge your Senators to co-sponsor S. 1899 today!

A Report Card on the 2001 Session of the U. S. Senate

 

With the 107th Congress returning to its second session, it is

time to evaluate the record of the first session in handling President Bush's

judicial nominations. The report card for the U. S. Senate for last year shows

failing grades. Neither political party acquitted itself well, but Democrats

certainly deserve an " F. " For several years, Demo leaders railed at the

GOP-controlled Senate, giving Republicans an " F " for their handling of Clinton's

judicial nominees (although the GOP ratified 373 selections and rejected only
