Guest guest
Hi, I have nursed babies and found tea made from fenugreek seeds to be very effective in increasing milk supply. Also I just read that tumeric is also good for increasing lactation. You can do searches on these herbs at www.google.com which is how I have read about them. How I make the fenugreek tea is I pour boiling water over the seeds and let them soak. Then when it is cool I drink the tea and add honey to the seeds and eat them too! My baby daughter always asks for the seeds too. Someone recently suggested that she might be familiar with the taste of the tea from tasting it in my milk and that is maybe why she is so fond of the seeds. All I know is she now points to the teapot I always use and asks for them. They must be doing her some good. She has a very healthy appetite, which is one thing fenugreek is good for. He always fought me nursing on the left (yet I had plenty of milk), and we finally figured out that he only wanted to lay to the right (I switched to the football hold on the left), my milk supply was low and have been having a hard time increasing it. I am on some herbs containing milk thistle. Any other ideas? I also pump several times per day. Guest guest
Hi Sindea, I breastfed for 5 years continually, 2 kids, and I just want to encourage you to keep going, it could just be a phase. There are the herbs, there is also other things you could consider, such as are you drinking enough water? Coffee and tea are dehydrating, so they dont count, in fact you really shouldnt have them at all. Also, stress levels. If you are trying to be supermum and do too much, its likely to contribute to your problem. Just lazing around with baby and breastfeeding as much as you can, eating well, getting lots of rest, taking herbs- it should help immensely. You probably realise if you supplement, your supply will drop. Breastfeeding at night is important too if you want to keep your supply up if its dwindling- I slept with my babies so it wasnt a problem, I barely woke. If you are pumping, I suspect you probably work- so sleeping with bubs is really important (IMHO). I never had any problems with supply- well, rather the opposite- but a friend did, but when she slowed down and stopped trying to do so much, it flowed well again. good luck love Peela --- sindea <sindea wrote: > Hi there, I am still new around here, but am > enjoying the list greatly!!! > > I am having a hard time with my 7 month old son. Guest guest
Peela- Thanks! I am not working, unless you want to consider taking care of 2 kids... I am pumping for 2 reasons- so that I may be able to leave the baby with my husband or a sitter from time to time, and to help increase the supply. But I am ONLY having problems on the left. This is totally due to him refusing to nurse on that side (I had mentioned that he fought me alot and by the time I figured out he just liked to lay to the right, the milk supply was low...)... As far as it being a phase, he is almost 8 months and it has been going on since 3 months... I know I just need to increase the supply on the one side, so he does not get frustrated trying to get enough out! I drink lots of water and eat healthy. Thanks for the advice! I have gotten the fenugreek seeds as of yesterday and started that route as well... Sindeadriving Washington nuts since 1991... Guest guest
Hi Sindea, I've been meaning to reply but haven't had the time, until now, to write down the thoughts in my head. Since this has been going on for so long I'm assuming you have ruled out all reasons for pain or discomfort - ears, throat, sinuses, teeth, etc. Also, if you are using some sort of ointment, cream, etc on one side, the baby may not like that. If pain or irritants can be ruled out and it seems to be just the way the baby likes it, there are some things you can do to " coerce " him into nursing on that side. Catch him hungry, but still half asleep so that he may " forget " to rebel. Use a football hold or other alternative position so that he still lays on the side he prefers but nurses from the other side. When all else fails, give up and nurse on one side. I know women who have done it. I have nursed three children, each for extended periods of time. Two of them were quite challenging at times. Hope some of this may be helpful to you, Bobbi Sue On Fri, 13 Jul 2001 12:19:40 -0700 " sindea " <sindea writes: > lol, yes, I am different sized alright!!! but the past 2 days I have > gotten him to burse 2 times a day on the legt! progress...
