Re: recent LM article

To Whom It May Concern:

I must say I am absolutely appalled to read the "Take Care - Personal Safety Tips" published under the Lancefield Neighbourhood House heading in the last issue of the LM! I cannot believe you would publish an article whose source and author are "unknown", which may scare some women into thinking they may have inadvertedly caused themselves, and possibly their children, to develop breast cancer! I ALWAYS have a bottle of water ready for drinking in my car and frequently drink from it, ensuring my two daughters (and son) also drink from it.

Whenever you receive an email (which I most certainly think this was) from someone claiming something which is unsourced, PLEASE check with www.snopes.com. Search for the subject and, more often than not, you will find Snopes have researched and found whether the matter is an "urban legend" or truthful. In this case, the report is an "urban legend", and Snopes give reference to medical journals proving it untrue. Really, I realize the Lancefield community is very supportive of those with cancer - it is a subject close to most residents' hearts, but PLEASE do the research BEFORE publishing.

I recently read an article that stated research is showing mammograms increase the incidence of breast cancer in women who choose to have their "breasts manhandled, and regularly flattened and squished into a cold x-ray machine…. Research by the Nordic Cochrane Center in Denmark found that for every 2000 women who had mammograms over the course of 10 years, only one life would be prolonged, while 10 women would be treated with unnecessary radiation and potentially harmful treatments. Meanwhile, according to a 2005 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, both standard mammograms and the newer digital imaging methods miss 30% of cancer in women in their 40s." The article goes on to give more RESEARCHED evidence of risks related to mammograms. Find it at http://backofthebook.ca/living/labels/mammogram.html.

Well, LM, will you publish that one?
