Toxic Metal Report: Lead Is Still in the Workplace and Can Affect Genetic

_A new government report indicates that on-the-job exposure to lead

continues to be a hazard for US workers. Nationally, blood lead levels

increased

between 2005 and 2006/2007. Newly published research links lead released

from a mother’s bones during pregnancy with “turning on and off†fetal

genes, which may make her offspring more susceptible to diseases like

Alzheimer’

Ensnared by an Undercover Investigation, Drug Study Reviewer Halts Many of

Its Review Operations

 

_The GAO created a fake medical study of a fake product to see whether

for-profit review boards adequately supervised medical trials. Two firms

turned it down, but a third drug review firm, Coast IRB, took the bait. Coast

IRB has now voluntarily halted many of its review operations at the FDA’s

request. Up to 300 trials could be affected. The safety of volunteers in

clinical trials is a worry, as is the objectivity of the results presented to

Time To Make Your Voice Heard on Electronic Medical Records—When Security

is Breached, What Happens Next?

 

_The Federal Trade Commission is accepting public comment through June 1

on a proposed rule that would require notification of consumers when the

security of their electronic health information is breached. The FTC estimates

that there will be about eleven breaches of medical record security and

privacy per year. This of course only refers to unauthorized breaches. It

does include authorized use of your private medical records by many parties

without notifying you under current federal rules. _

_Five individuals, including former Congressman Dick Armey and lead

plaintiff Brian Hall, have filed a lawsuit accusing the Social Security

Administration (SSA) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) with

improperly adopting illegal and coercive policies that deny otherwise eligible

retirees their rightful Social Security benefits if those retirees choose not

to enroll in Medicare._

Protecting Due Process: Physicians’ Rights in North Carolina

the legislation in North Carolina designed to protect the due process

rights of physicians during disciplinary hearings. State Rep. Michael Wray has

introduced HB1352, and State Sen. Jerry Tillman has introduced SB958._
