Hi List-members,

I am new to the list and this is my first post. If I may, here is my bio.

I am a 43 male, practitioner and trainer of NLP. I have been in the field

for some 15 years and while I think NLP is the greatest thing since sliced

bread I have an eclictic viewpoint to whatever works. Over the years, I

have studied various alternative healing modalities. I currently live in

El Paso Texas, I am a specialist in working with sexual and physical abuse

survivors. I was recruited into a religious cult at age 17 and was in it

for some 20 yrs, this experience made me a specialist in deprogramming cult

members, if you care to read my story here is the

url,http://www.stormloader.com/shaun/victor1.htm. I look forward to being

here and sharing my experiences and hearing from all of you.

herbal remedies,

This is a possibility here, but a fine line, and (since I'm not the owner of the

list) I will hope to pass along the info of why the " oops " (among others)

involved banning (though I'm not trying to take " Doc's " job away!): The by-laws,

as I hastily read them stated it was a no-no to advertise other sites (as

indiscriminently was done in " oops " ), or MLM/business opportunities, and

likewise, supplements that were not made or used by, or on onesself! So in other

words, the people who join hoping for sales, downlines, cult followings, etc.

will automatically be banned.

The email course I am taking is found at

http://www.rainbowcrystal.com

The course is on Chacras and as a course bonus, you got a discount on a

set of crystals. They seem to be knowledgeable, but almost everyone

knows more than I about this subject.

I was just attuned to Level one Reiki on July 21, so I feel I am living

a little on the edge or am just beginning the path!!!!

Hope to get to know you all better!

Thanks, Bill. Good list.

There's also the acupressure.com website which has a few sample

chapters from Acupressure's Potent Points. The book doesn't go into

TCM (though point selection is based on TCM). The book and website

are good for showing and explaining where some acupoints are.

Hello Linda,

You can make it anyway you desire. The idea is to get the cayenne where it hurts. Ointment, creams, tonic, liniment, poultice, plaster, paste, or what have you. Yes, any way will work. Get the meanest hottest cayenne you can find. Powdered habanero is the hottest and best to use. Welcome to the list and have lots of fun sorting through the archives and messages.

[herbal remedies] new to list

Hello to all, I am really new to the list. I live up on Vancouver Island and have been interested in Herbal remedies and making my own for a long time. My first day on the list I read with interest about two subjects that affect me, bursitis, and osteoarthritis. I have a question to Don about his cayenne backache remedy. Could a person make it into an ointment or cream to rub into the sore area? Thanks for any info you can give me. I am going thru the archives, have just started, so if the info is already there, I will stumble over it eventually.

Thanks

Ready for a challenge? here it is

For the last 5 years my general practice md has treated me for depression

without success. I had been on many different antidepressants, sleeping

pills, blood pressure pills etc. My symptoms

continued to get worse( NO energy or motivation to do anything, headaches/

migraines, sweating, oily face, 10# weight gain, BP sometimes 150/90, pulse

100-125, insomnia, anxiety, skin scarring) To complicate things I had couple

of minor back injuries since 1995, and became dependent on RX narcotics. I

was able to overcome that within the last 6 months. To further complicate

things my son was traumatized by his father 5 years ago and the stress of

that has been overwhelming.

I began seeing a TCM doctor after a friend suggested. He suggested lab work,

and my TSH was 0.06

I have been taking Thyroidine 1500 mg, and royal jelly/ bee

propolis/ginseng combo 1000 mg daily for 2 months. I have only noticed a

subtle change in how I feel, and that may be only due to overcoming the

physical narcotic withdrawal. I will repeat my lab work this week, adding

hormone levels.

I am very frustrated trying to separate the symptoms of hypothyroidism,

anxiety, and withdrawal. I no longer believe I was or am depressed, and am

upset that my doctor treated me for depression so long and didn't check lab

work on me. I feel so gross, I know I have to be full of toxins.

Does the treatment I am on sound right? I appreciate any suggestions, or

input.

Sharon

You sound like you're basically on the right track to me.

Unfortunately psychiatric disorders are over-diagnosed in the US.

Thyroid problems are one of the things that can result in

depression. So can certain untreated viral infections. The

treatment will be different depending on what what the cause is. No

amount of antidepressants or talk therapy are going to work on

depression due to thyroid problems or viral infection. The thyroid

problems will have to be addressed in that case, and the viral

infection will have to be addressed in that case.

There is a book called I believe Ill, Not Insane. It goes into some

of the physical medical conditions that can have marked psychiatric

components. Like hearing voices in the case of certain brain tumors

and I believe some forms of epilepsy. I forget the name of the two

authors. It's a good book for healers to have.

Doctors and nurses in the West used to be better trained in using

psychiatric components to arrive at a correct diagnosis than they

are today. For example, if the person is or appears unusually

angry, suspect and rule in or rule out that the person is in pain.

If the person is unusually anxious, suspect and rule in or rule out

that there may be mild, undiagnosed, and untreated breathing

problems.

You may want to see a different MD - perhaps even an

endocrinologist - in order to monitor the glandular problems. There

are a number of things that can go wrong with the thyroid gland, the

clinical picture can be complex, and sometimes more than a TSH test

is needed in order to arrive at the correct diagnosis. Most GPs

aren't trained in this kind of differenciation though all GPs should

know enough to recognize possible thyroid problems and order the

basic tests. TCM healers - herbalists, acumpuncturists, etc. - are

only qualified to diagnose and treat TCM imbalances - unless they're

also MDs or DOs.

Did the TCM healer give you a TCM diagnosis? Please ask for one if

he or she didn't.

I'm not a clinical practitioner of TCM, only someone who knows the

basics and how to explain them to others. There are professionals

on this list, but they can't diagnose long-distance. What we can do

is raise certain possibilities and help you to understand TCM and

some of the terminology.

The symptoms of fatigue, sweating, and weight gain point to the

possibility of Spleen Deficiency and a weakened Spleen. The oily

complexion further points to the possibility of weakened Spleen and

Dampness problems. Are you having any digestive system problems? The

Spleen plays a major role in a person having enough Qi (roughly

though inadequately translated as " energy " , pronounced " chee " ).

Since the Lungs control the opening and closing of the pores of the

skin, if the Lungs don't have enough Qi, the person will sweat

excessively. (Yeah, I know this sounds weird, but it's TCM

physiology, not anatomy and physiology.) Anyway, TCM healers

automatically suspect and rule in or rule out Qi Deficiency when

sweating is excessive.

Another role of the Spleen - besides accumulating Qi and

transporting it - is the transformation and transportation of

liguids in the body. Thus the Dampness accumulation (edema, though

not limited to that) seen in some case of weak Spleen. Another

possible symptom of Dampness accumulation is a heavy feeling,

especially in the lower body. The person may also be a bit " foggy "

in other areas as well. For example, some people will describe a

lack of mental sharpness as " brain fog " .

Ginseng is a Qi tonic herb. A Qi tonic herb is one that supplements

Qi. I assume it's panax ginseng you're on. There are other Qi

tonic herbs. For example, astragalus is a Qi tonic herb. So is

licorice (real licorice, not the anise candy sold under the name of

licorice in the US). Rice is very good for strengthening the Spleen.

There are different causes of insomnia. For example, if the person

has trouble falling asleep but sleeps soundly after finally falling

asleep, this points strongly to Heart Blood Deficiency. If the

person falls asleep easily enough but wakes frequently during the

night, this points to Kidney Yin Deficiency. If sleep is dream

disturbed, this points to the possibility of Liver Fire or Heart

Fire. What Maciocia calls " restless sleep with dreams " points to

food retention. Awakening too early and not being able to get back

to sleep points to Gall Bladder Deficiency. (Information taken from

The Foundations of Chinse Medicine by Giovanni Maciocia, p. 159.)

Dreams of decay and things like corpses, zombies, etc. can be an

indication of digestive system problems. The dreams are a symbol of

what is happening in the body. More putrification of food instead

of digestion of food. This points both to the possiblity of Spleen

weakness and food retention.

I want to stress something for the beginning students on the list.

If Sharon reports that she has trouble falling asleep, this also can

point strongly to the Spleen being weak. Another of the key roles

of the Spleen is the manufacture of Blood. If the Spleen isn't

producing enough of good quality Blood, the Heart and the Liver

aren't going to have enough of it. There may be mixed symptoms and

signs of both Dampness and Dryness. For example there can be edema

but the blood volume may be low. This can result in some cases of

rapid heart beat and high blood pressure. (Some, not all. The heart

pumps quicker and harder in order to move that thicker than normal

blood.)

This is something else I want to stress to the students on the

list. Consider the headaches/ migraines that Sharon has. Migraines

can have a number of different causes. Some of them are Interior

(trunk of body, internal Organs). But, some migraines can be due to

Wind Cold or Wind Heat invading the Exterior (head, neck, shoulders,

arms, legs, skin, muscles, bones, and meridians (pathways of Qi

flow)). Whenever there are indications of Spleen weakness and Qi

Deficiency, if the person has headaches - including migraines -

consider the possibility that the headaches may be due to Wind Cold

(and Exterior Dampness) or sometimes Wind Heat easily invading the

body because the Protective Qi is weak. When Exterior Pernicious

Evils (Wind, Cold, Damp, Heat, Dryness) invade the body, the first

two meridians they hit are the Bladder and Small Intestine

meridians. These headaches - including the migraines - start out at

the back of the head - along part of the course of the Bladder

meridian. They quickly progress to include more of the head, but

they start out in the back. Even when the headache is full-blown,

the neck muscles on the side that the migraine is on can be swollen

and rigid.

These headaches fit the Western criteria for migraines. Pain on one

side of the head (or considerably worse on one side than the other),

the " aura " or other visual disturbance prior to the attack, etc. As

the Pernicious Evil(s) invade further into the deeper meridians and

in some cases into the Interior, the nausea appears. I want to

stress that Exterior Pernicious Evils invading due to weak

Protective Qi is not the only possible Root of migraines. But if the

person has signs and symptoms of Qi Deficiency and Spleen Deficiency

and if the person is aware that weather conditions are playing a

role in bringing on the headaches, strongly suspect the possibility

of weak Protective Qi and Spleen weakness, and rule in or rule out.

BTW, if it's Wind Cold, these are usually easy to cure via herbs or

acupressure and knowing where to place some heating pads. Sorry, but

I don't know as much about Wind Heat as I know about Wind Cold.

The anxiety can point to Yin Deficiency. Yin calms, cools, and

moistens the body. Yin Deficiency also can result in fatigue, but

this fatigue is characterized by the person not being able to sit

still no matter how tired he or she is. The person is " driven " .

BTW, Yin Deficiency also will lower the pain threshold. So can

magnesium deficiency. The person feels pain that the person

wouldn't feel if Yin (and/or Mg) were sufficient.

Whenever there are problems with the back (and/or knees), suspect

and rule in or rule out Kidney imbalance. And any physical trauma

can result in Blood Stasis problems. That's something else to rule

in or rule out.

The Kidneys are damaged by fear and fright. Especially very strong

and sudden fear or fright. The Spleen is vulnerable to worrying

excessively (especially pensiveness and obsessing). The Spleen also

can be weakened by poor diet, not getting enough rest, standing on

one's feet in one place for long periods of time, eating on the run,

overwork, over-exercise, and eating when upset.

A proper TCM diagnosis will include a tongue diagnosis and a pulse

diagnosis. A TCM pulse diagnosis will differ from a Western

allopathic diagnosis in that the healer will check 6 different

pulses (3 on each arm) at the same time. The pressure on the pulse

will be varied to get at least 12 different readings.

Even if the TCM healer also is a licensed MD or DO, the healer wil

ask the patient to explain exactly what she or he means by a Western

diagnosis. Symptoms can vary, and the TCM healer goes by the

symptoms that the person is actually having or having the worst, not

by textbook examples or Western diagnoses.

You asked about digestive symptoms.

I was initially treated for digestive symptoms with anti bacterial and anti

viral herbs. my intestinal lining was compromised from all the medicine I

had taken. That problem has resolved.

Also the migraines have decreased to once a month during my cycle, and

residual discomfort from the back injuries are very minimal and seldom

bother me. I think getting away from the RX pain pills helped a lot.

The ginseng in the combo I take states American ( 400mg daily), but the

healer states he never uses American. he states he has had interference with

the health department and had to change all the labels on their products.

The Thyroidine is now labeled Spirulina.

You mentioned that a proper TCM diagnosis will include a tongue and pulse

diagnosis. I have wondered about that because this healer has not diagnosed

either one, but seems on target with what is going on with me. I did not

get a TCM diagnosis, but will ask when I go in next time.

About the blood volume- how can you tell what the volume/quality is? my H & H

were 14 and 40 ( could those be false values affected by other things going

on?)

The healer I have been seeing is not a medical doctor, but has a list of

credentials that is impressive.( at least to me)Would you please check out

their site and give me feedback ? WWW.natures-things.com

I saw a TCM healer in Houston who looked at my tongue checked my pulse and

told ME my symptoms. I was amazed. He treated me with tea and acupuncture.

I only quit going because I needed to get off the RX pain pills- I felt like

I was wasting money and time until I was serious about quitting them. Now I

am done with them. I am not sure who would be the best healer for me. How

can I know? May I post names to get opinions? I began going here because it

is local, but I will go to Houston if necessary.

I understand now that I need an endocrinologist. Do I continue with TCM

treatments as well? I was really trying to stay away from chemicals, but it

sounds like I would have to take something if I am going to a western doctor

I just want to feel better. I am embarrassed to be in this situation- as I

mentioned in my first post, I am a nurse and know better.
