Hi everyone,

I was given a cleanse, by an Ayurvedic specialist, to do at home. The purpose is

to remove

ama. It says I'm supposed to consume some Ghee every day. Can someone tell me

how I do

that? Do I melt it? Do I mix it with something else? Or consume it plain? There

were no other

instructions for how to take the Ghee. I appreciate any info you might have.

Please check up whether it is pure ghee, or medicated ghee. In ayurveda the

medicated ghee is called " Gritham " . There are so many Grithams.

Any ghee is good only. You can just swallow.

I would think its including it in your food diet. Since ghee is a purified

butter, you can use it in place of butter in your daily diet. But make sure you

use the ghee only enough for your body to be able to digest!

Good Luck!

Hello Melody,

I find that baking the butter is the EASIEST way to make ghee. Ghee

is considered one of the best rejuvenating and longevity promoting

foods. It's rate of absorption by the body is higher than any other

cooking oil, so it's excellent for transporting nutrients/minerals

and herbs to the tissues. Ghee stimulates digestion without

aggravating the digestive fire. It can be heated to high temperatures

without burning. You can even deep fry foods in ghee. Substitute ghee

for butter or oil in any recipe. However, I don't bake with it.

Here's my fool proof method...

Take 3 pounds of unsalted butter (believe me, you'll use it!)

put it in an 8 cup pyrex measuring cup

Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour.

Skim off the " cheese " on the top. (i put it in the vegetables that I

cook that day, what's leftover I throw away)

Pour the oil through cheesecloth, until you see the water on the

bottom (don't let that mix with the oil).

It's really easier than it sounds, and when you see what's happening

this will make sense!

You don't need to refrigerate it, and it'll keep for about two months.

Enjoy!

when taking gritham for medicinal reasons it should be taken alone.

It does not work the same way when it is cooked in food.

The solids need not be removed.

It can be kept with the ghee.

Take a tablespoon each morning as you would flax seed oil

I've never tried making my ghee in a crockpot. One of the reasons why

I like baking it in a pyrex, is because you can see the layers so

clearly. Have you ever heard of leaving the " cheese " on top?

Dear Melody,

Ghee when used for cleansing period is used with following pre-requisites

1) It should be medicated herbal ghee as a general rule, unless specifically

advised. Plain ghee is not generally used for cleansing ama.

2) It should be always taken in melt form.

3) The dose should be predetermined eg. 5ml or 10 ml or 30ml etc.

4) The course should not exceed more than 7 days.

5) It can be taken along with warm milk or herbal decoction.

Ghee is not the remedy of choice in conditions of ama.

Interesting. I've asked Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar about this, and he said

the milk solids should be strained and thrown away.

I agree with this since I believe that the proteins have been damaged

by the long heating. These proteins should not be eaten in sweets and

other dishes although it is a common practice to do so - these

proteins are very difficult to digest and cause heavy ama.
