Dear members of the iastam-discussion group,

 

I am a social scientist specialised in the social-cultural aspects of Indian

medical traditions in general and Ayurvedic and Unani medicines in particular.

From 1996 onwards I have done PhD-research in India on the Ayurvedic and Unani

industry. On request of the publisher Orient Longman I have reworked my

PhD-thesis. The new title is " Taking Traditional Knowledge to the Market: the

Modern Image of the Ayurvedic and Unani Industry " . At the moment I am working on

a new reseach project titled " The Politics of Value and the Construction of

Cultural Commodities: Ayurveda and Unani Tibb in Popular Culture, 1982-2007 " . I

am affiliated with IIAS (see signature below) and a member of the

IASTAM-council.

The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) is a postdoctoral research

centre based in Leiden and Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Its main objective is to

encourage the interdisciplinary and comparative study of Asia and to promote

national and international cooperation in the field. The geographical scope of

the institute covers South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia and Central Asia. The

institute focuses on the humanities and social sciences and, where relevant, on

their interaction with other sciences.
