Guest guest
I have been trying all the suggestions to aid my cracked fingertips but am still having problems. Loading up with oil and then wearing cotton gloves to bed has seemed to shorten the duration, however. We are presently at our condo in Park City, Utah. It is as dry, if not more so, here as it is in our home in Arizona. Yesterday 4 tips cracked at the same time. That was a first. Does anyone know of a test (food or blood) that would find out if my system is lacking or overproducing something? This situation has been getting progressively worse since I lost 30lbs over the summer. We spent the summer in Utah and I went on a restricted diet (1 piece of buttered toast in morning. 2 pieces of string cheese and 3 triskets for lunch. Guest guest
I have experienced the same problem. First how much water are you drinking? I would try to drink at least a gallon< more is better> of water a day. Flax seed oil is great for dry skin and hair. I would start with 4000 mg. tablets of flax seed a day. While oil is ok, I would try Vicks Vapor Rub with the gloves at night and lots of hand lotion during the day. Wear Playtex gloves any time you put you hands in water.. dishes, cleaning, etc. I have seen a big improvement doing this. I have no idea who else might perform this test. Have you tried using Aquaphor for your cracked finger tips? You can buy it at the drugstore. I put it on my hands at night.... last thing before going to sleep. Pattie in GA FMS/CFS/Mercury and Lead toxicity/Hypothyroid/Iron deficiency anemia. Guest guest
Hi Lois, Are you taking cod liver oil to get your omega-3s? You should be! Also gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) [the good omega-6 fat] is required for any skin disorders. GLA is legendary for creating smooth, supple skin. Ironically, essential fatty acids were once a mainstay of dermatological treatments for a numbber of skin disorders until the advent of the more toxic, more costly/less effective topical steroids. The most economical and practical choice for GLA is borage oil capsules. Take at least one 300 mg capsule a day. For therapeutic purposes, I would take more. Guest guest
Lois, you sound like an articulate, intelligent woman. Why on earth are you eating so poorly? Your body is starving for some missed nutrients, is what I would say....and you DID ask, I think! <g> If you are still interested in losing weight, you need to eat a much more varied diet - forget the buttered toast, and forget the triscuits. Swap those calories out for a healthy egg, perhaps poached in a teaspoon of olive or coconut oil for breakfast. For lunch, a piece of chicken with broccoli, cauliflower, or a fresh green salad would be a much better bet for your poor starving body. I know all about the diet demon - I often jokingly say my life has just been a series of diets, punctuated by normal eating! But you can watch your weight, diet, whatever, in a much more healthy way. I have a soap/lotion business, and have studied enough material to know that the cracks you suffer come from within, and no amount of lotions and potions will permanently heal them, I'm afraid. Please consider this in the spirit in which it was intended....if you'd like to chat, just e-mail me privately. Guest guest
Hi Donna, Evening primrose oil contains the gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) that borage oil does. Borage oil appears to be the most economical and practical choice. A single capsule usually contains at least four times the GLA of an evening primrose capsule. Guest guest
I feel for you! I use Lansinoh on my horribly dry hands and lips and it does WONDERS. It comes in a purple tube and it is in the baby section at Target and baby shops, it is meant for cracked nipples while breastfeeding.... A little goes a long way. ALso, are you dehydrated at all? Sounds like you did a great job losing weight but need to add more variety into your diet now? Guest guest
--- Greetings. Previously the skin on my hands always cracked in the winter and became really chapped and bleeding. After increasing my vitamin and mineral intake and taking more essential fatty acids I seldom have a problem. :-) Co-q10 sometimes helps with frequently occurring skin problems.
