Shmuel,

Thank you for this well considered post. Very clear with regard to both Eastern and Western theory. Also your comments on trauma or exertion leading to attacks is quite interesting. I teach anatomy and physiology with clinical correlations, so I will think more deeply now about the pathophysiology of gout.

And Emmanuel, once you have done so it would be great to hear what your observeations are...

Marco and Shumuel,

Without further consideration, my mind's eye goes back to organic chemistry lab when we would find various ways of making organic molecules precipitate out (crystalize) from our saturated solutions. One wizardly German professor with a big smile used to flick his beard over my beaker to actually "seed" my solutions. I infer from Shmuel's comments that over exertion and/or local trauma is bringing about this precipitation ... perhaps even a "seeding" of the solution.

I want to read 20 or 30 papers on Medline regarding pathophysiologies and treatments of gout. Then I'll meditate awhile with that information and Shmuel's comments, and get back to you. I have a sense that Shmuel's comments will be a good guide for my meditations.

Gratefully and Respectfully,

Emmanuel Segmen

hi jas

just scanning the messages and noticed your query about gout. have

just recently treated a patient with this condition , though this

lady was not on any medication for it.....thankfully.

i have found acupuncture to work in the past on the cases i have

seen, though it does take a while and diet (obviously) plays a big

part. have always found a heat component to be present and i would

agree with others comments that it is often due to blood stasis

locally. however the last patient i treated was not responding as i

would have hoped and her progress was erratic.....sometimes her

condition appeared to improve only to recurr intermittently. there

was a 'stress' element here connected with work and so underlying

syndromes connected with liver qi stagnation long-term were present.

quite simply my final treatment was to use moxa......sparrow-pecking

technique....and i gave her some to take home to use twice a day.

the results were brilliant and she has had no recurrence for the last

2 months!

initially, i had hesitated in using moxa because of the heat involved

but it obviously worked in moving the blood stasis in the joint.

dependant on your patients diagnosis, you may find that this

helps.....or you may already have sorted out the problem.

i would be interested to know what transpires

blessings

black cherry juice or black cherries are great for gout. A podiatrist

I knew recommended raspberries....but I have heard much more about

the cherries. It contains something that reduces the uric acid. I

have spoken to clients that say it really works

Raw cherries.  Lots of them.

One should eat about 1/2 pound of raw cherries per day.  Results should be seen in a couple weeks or so.

Try cherries (not marschino cherries); burdock capsules or burdock tea; quercetin. These have helped me during an attack.. (Last 2 attacks spread from toe to ankle and from one foot to another) If I took them on a more regular basis, I believe they would work better. Unfortunately, I only think of them during an attack.

Thanks Bruce. I have since learned this man likes his red meat and wine. I

think he is not willing to make any drastic changes in his diet. Too bad.

cleanse the blood of uric acid and stop eating foods

that create uric acid since the kidneys are not

removing it. do you eat these foods: " seafood, beans,

sweetbreads, gravies and anchovies "

" What is Gout?

Written by DynoMed.com, Indianapolis, IN

An ancient disease, gout is a chronic type of

inflammatory arthritis that causes immediate attacks

of pain, tenderness, redness, warmth and swelling in

some joints. Usually, the joints in the big toe are

affected, but gout can also affect the instep, ankles,

heels, knees, wrists, fingers and elbows.

Once believed to be the result of gluttony, gout is

now known to affect people from all walks of life and

often the disease is inherited. Less than one in ten

women will develop gout. About 500,000 people have

gout in the United States, with most being men between

the ages of 30 and 60. Gout accounts for about 5

percent of all cases of arthritis.

Causes of Gout

Gout is caused when there is over production of uric

acid in normal purine metabolism in the body. Genetics

can play a role in who develops gout. It can also

occur as a complication of other conditions. Some

people inherit the inability to process uric acid and

lose it in the urine. High blood levels of uric acid

in turn causes sodium monourate crystals to collect in

the joint fluid and joint coverings leading to gout, a

painful stiff swollen joint.

There are many reasons why an episode of gout will

appear, including drinking too much alcohol or eating

certain kinds of food rich in purines such as seafood,

beans, sweetbreads, gravies and anchovies.

Other potential triggers of gout include:

Surgery

Stress

Crash diets

Sudden, severe illness

Chemotherapy

Joint injury

High blood pressure

Excessive exercise.

Symptoms of Gout

Gout is said by some experts to be one of the most

painful of all types of arthritis. Incidents of gout

often develop very quickly and sometimes the first

incident will be at night. These painful incidents of

gout include swelling in the joints that lasts for

about a week without treatment. The skin may be red

and shiny around the affected joints.

Lumps (tophi) may be found under the skin around the

elbows, heels or ears. The uric acid crystals cause

these lumps and can also cause kidney stones to

develop.

A few people will only experience one gout attack.

However, for most people the gout attacks will keep

coming back every few months and will be worse in

intensity. If the disease is left untreated, it may

result in crippling damage to the joints.

Gout is easily identified through a physical

examination and diagnostic tests. Your doctor will

take a sample of the joint fluid and look for the

presence of uric acid crystals. He or she may also

take a blood test to measure the amount of uric acid

in your body.

Treatment of Gout

Through the use of certain kinds of medications, a

proper diet and exercise, gout sufferers will be able

to successfully treat their condition.

Uric acid levels in the body can be controlled through

medications, thus reducing the number of gout attacks.

Doctors will usually prescribe a medication called

allopurinol that stops the over production of uric

acid. If the kidneys are not excreting enough uric

acid, your doctor may prescribe a different kind of

medication such as probenecid or sulfinpyrazone.

Doctors have been using a drug called colchicine for

centuries to treat gout attacks. Colchicine relieves

pain while limiting the inflammation of the joint.

Often the drug provides relief quickly but there are

some side effects such as nausea, vomiting and

abdominal pain.

Nonsalicylate NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory

drugs) such as ibuprofen may be used for pain relief.

Aspirin should not be used because it can actually

make symptoms of gout worse.

Talk to your doctor or nutritionist about starting a

proper diet. There are certain foods that you should

stay away from and be sure to limit your alcohol

intake as wine and beer have been shown to make

symptoms worse.

A combination of exercise, rest and relaxation is

important in achieving an optimum level of health and

wellness. Your doctor or physical therapist will help

you create an exercise plan such as swimming or

walking that will help you maintain a healthy

lifestyle. "

Uric acid is also an significant antioxidant but obviously you want some level

less than what would produce gout. Lithium available in the USA as a

nutritional supplement as lithium aspertate or lithium orotate can be used to

treat gout.

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=349151

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1981 November; 78 (11): 68586862

Uric acid provides an antioxidant defense in humans against oxidant- and

radical-caused aging and cancer: a hypothesis.

B N Ames, R Cathcart, E Schwiers, and P Hochstein

During primate evolution, a major factor in lengthening life-span and

decreasing age-specific cancer rates may have been improved protective

mechanisms against oxygen radicals. We propose that one of these protective

systems is plasma uric acid, the level of which increased markedly during

primate evolution as a consequence of a series of mutations. Uric acid is a

powerful antioxidant and is a scavenger of singlet oxygen and radicals. We

show that, at physiological concentrations, urate reduces the oxo-heme

oxidant formed by peroxide reaction with hemoglobin, protects erythrocyte

ghosts against lipid peroxidation, and protects erythrocytes from

peroxidative damage leading to lysis. Urate is about as effective an

antioxidant as ascorbate in these experiments. Urate is much more easily

oxidized than deoxynucleosides by singlet oxygen and is destroyed by hydroxyl

radicals at a comparable rate. The plasma urate levels in humans (about 300

microM) is considerably higher than the ascorbate level, making it one of the

major antioxidants in humans. Previous work on urate reported in the

literature supports our experiments and interpretations, although the

findings were not discussed in a physiological context.

That's interesting.

All I know of Lithium is that it is a potassium antagonist and used to treat

Dear Jim, gout is a manifestation of a problem with the liver. It could be an

infection, parasite or severe congestion. I reccomend using milk thistle with

olive leaf extract. Use the milk thistle for a month, and the olive leaf for

four days. Of, course there is a reason for the gout so finding that would be

beneficial for the future,

Gout, at its core, is an inflammatory condition. It follows, then,

that removing as many inflammatory agents and introducing anti-

inflammatory agents will help.

They vary somewhat, from person to person based on a number of

metabolic anomolies, but gluten is pretty universally bad for

everyone. Bread, cereal and pasta are the worst offenders.

On the other hand, adding supplemental fish oils are almost

universally beneficial.

I'd have to know abit more about her, metabolically, to go any

further.

Gout is caused by a build-up of uric acid in the joints as you

probably know Jim and can even build up in the Kidneys and so be a

factor in high blood pressure.

Drink plenty of water and you can even add some sodium bicarb to it.

Go easy on protein for about a month and take extra vitamin C and some

Magnesium ... also you could juice a whole bunch of celery & enjoy.

Good health - Ray.
