Metaphor for Illness or Symptom ...

What is Metaphor? We believe that there is a link between the mind and the

symptoms and illnesses that our bodies express. The link that we use to examine

the body through the mind is metaphor. This works because we are story-telling

creatures and everything in our lives is part of our story.

With our physical symptoms our mind is telling a specific story. Our mind

interprets the type of symptom that we have, describes the physiological dynamic

that is going on and all of this has a certain meaning to us. This is our story

about our body. This all means that we can look at the body as a script that the

mind is writing.

We do this by identifying and interpreting the metaphor that underlies the

physical symptoms that we express. There are many important aspects to examine

with each metaphor such as the part of the body affected, the type of symptom

that is being expressed, the medical dynamic causing the illness, duration of

the problem etc.

By interpreting the story that the body is writing we can find the underlying

psychological process of the mind. This is how the use of metaphor gives us

insight into healing the body through the mind.

Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa involves a great fear of obesity and harbours self-attack,

because we believe we are overweight. This condition leads to extreme loss of

appetite and a lack of eating that eventually starve the body. Anorexia nervosa

is believed to be a psychological condition in which the progressive loss of

appetite can lead to death. It is the result of lost bonding, distorted

perception and a need for love as well as self-acceptance. Anorexia comes from a

dissociated form of independence, while paradoxically having the need of

approval and specialness. These feelings stem from the belief that we are

unloved and unacceptable, and therefore, we create self-judgement,

self-rejection and self-attack. We are caught by societal norms that have become

distorted and exaggerated. We are harrowed with feelings of inferiority and the

need for acceptance. We are experiencing a crisis in self-esteem, and at the

same time we are perfectionists. Feeling we have no value, we desperately need

love, yet are not able to receive it. We feel such a lack of self-worth while

being cut off from ourselves that we do not allow ourselves to have food, the

metaphor for love and nurturing. Both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are a

destructive form of calling attention to ourselves and trying to get love. In

both cases there is unresolved feelings of shame about ourselves and our bodies,

so we take on false societal values and carry them to an extreme.

View Dynamic >With any given illness or symptom there can be many different

dynamics at work, and there are, at times, layers of healing to accomplish.

Often one dynamic will be more prevalent than another and it is this that we

want to show as we explore some of the body systems and their symptoms.

For this reason the system will randomly select the most prevalent or available

dynamic that is at work with your particular illness or symptom, leaving it up

to the universe to identify it. The metaphor of the illness or symptom helps to

guide us to some of the prevalent issues that are at work. The illness dynamics

become very useful tools in identifying the most effective healing method to

use.

Sacrifice

Every illness is a form of sacrifice. It is a place where we are sacrificing

ourselves to achieve a certain end. Sometimes we embrace sacrifice as we take on

mistaken beliefs about the helpfulness of being a martyr or one who sacrifices.

We may hurt ourselves to try and save others. This may be part of our religious

up-bringing or a family role we use to attempt to save our family. We think that

sacrifice is the highest form of giving, but, instead, it's a role that

compensates for guilt and unworthiness. Sacrifice is a psychological mistake

meant to trap people; we lose now to win later.

In each case, sacrifice hides a fear of intimacy and a fear of equality. It

gives, but it doesn't receive, which leads to burnout. It is acting out of a

role, which is doing the right thing for the wrong reason. Many times it's an

attempt to save others by harming ourselves when everything could have been

accomplished through truth or grace, without anyone having to lose.

Unfortunately, sacrifice doesn't work, and it rarely saves others because it is

a psychological trap. In sacrifice we have an excuse to avoid our own purpose

and destiny in the guise of helping others.

Choice

Choice, one of the great powers and gifts of the mind, is that which creates our

experience, and at the deepest levels, even our reality. The mind continuously

has thoughts about what we want, all of which, at the deepest level, is a

choice. We have hundreds of thoughts per minute, many of them idle wishes or

mistaken choices, and we are aware of so very few of them. All of these thoughts

have the power of choice and program our mind and world accordingly. Many

negative choices are made in a spilt-second and immediately repressed, so when

negative conditions such as our illness, show up, we have forgotten we made the

choice. There is always some kind of mistaken agenda at the bottom of every

negative choice. Sometimes we think we would get something, or we think

something would make us happy. We not only deny we made the choice, we would

deny that we had the power of choice to begin with. It not only makes us hapless

pilgrims, open to all the mishaps and misadventures that can occur in life, but

is also puts us in a weak and reactive stance. This denies the central place

that choice has in our lives, and it makes us afraid of our minds, our power and

ourselves.

The mind is most open just as we go to sleep and as we wake up. At these times,

we are less distracted and able to make stronger choices, which build our lives

in a powerful way. Of course, we can do this anytime of the night or day. When

we are struggling with our own or a loved ones illness, we can continuously make

new choices for health. As there can be many layers of pain or illusion

generating a certain illness, we may need to choose for the healing of our fear

and for health every time we think of the situation. This is a great deal more

effective than the fear, worry and depression we feel about the illness.

Healing Exercise - Choice

It's time to make a new choice about your illness.

.. What is the new healing choice you want to make?

.. Make this choice when you first wake up in the morning and as the last thing

at night before you go to sleep. Include this choice at any other time that it

comes into your mind.

.. Every choice you make about wellness and the healing of your illness can help.

It is especially helpful to choose to resolve any fear, anger, guilt and

conflict you may be experiencing that can cause the illness.Janie Patrick and
