Dear Rajkumar

As far as we know; no recording of Swami Vivekananda's voice has

ever been found. Such rumours keep circulating but have never been

validated.

In the newspaper " The Hindu " of Aug 7, 2002 there was a reference of

the recording of Swamiji made for the Maharaja of Khetri being

stored at Mysore Palace.

The entire story is available in this link:

http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/mp/2002/08/07/stories/200208070020

0400.htm

I have been unable to confirm this independently from Mysore Palace.

I wonder if anyonre from Bangalore could confirm this.

The recording supposedly is damaged but even if the damaged

recording is found, I am sure at least some snippets should be

salvagable by modern technology.

Namaste,

Mary Louise Burke, in Vol. 5 - p.169, refers to recordings

made in at McKindleys' Schiller Street flat, and in April 1896 at the

Walton Place flat. She also refers to Swamiji's letter to Josephine

McLeod (Complete Works - Vol. 8, p. 338) in which he requests Mr.

Leggett to send some 'cylinders' to make recordings, as Josephine

owned a phonograph.

In Vol. II, p. 491, of the Biography Of Swami Vivekananda by

His Eastern and Western Disciples, there is a reference to Swamiji

having made recordings while he stayed with the Hale family in Nov. 1899.

It would be interesting to follow the trail of Hale family

belongings since then!

Another interesting reference is as follows:

http://www.gautamindia.com/Feb2K2/music.htm

" ….During his voyage of America he reportedly sent a

gramophone machine ( i.e. A recording machine)

to Khetari prince. Clearly he sensed the value of

this modern invention to Indian music and its

patrons. Was he not a rare example of a modern

traditionalist ! " …………..

Sunder

A clarification:

This reference is to the book Swami Vivekananda in the West, a

6 vol. work by MLB (Sister Gargi).

The recordings found here:

Welcome Address - Vivekananda : Swami Vivekananda : Free Download & Streaming : Internet Archive

seems to me to be original Swami Vivekananda recordings from 1893. There is introduction by a lady, and loud applause from the audience.

If there is a doubt about the authenticity, it would be interesting to know what the doubt is based on. Apparently there are no good positive documentation either. The source of this recording seems difficult to trace.
